Jason Statham's 'Shelter' Breaks Box Office Records in MENA
Amazon Scores Big as Jason Statham's New 107-Minute Action Thriller Shoots up Streaming Ranks

The white-knuckle thriller is one of two films Statham released in 2026.

As audiences await the theatrical release of his next action thriller, Mutiny, Jason Statham keeps proving he's the definitive streaming heavyweight. His other 2026 movie has been constantly jumping back and forth on the top 10 most-watched lists since its digital premiere. Now, it's gaining some traction on another streamer, and actually getting close to catching up to one of 2026's biggest blockbusters. Those doubting Statham's drawing power have no idea what he's still capable of.

'Shelter' Is Statham's Best Movie in Years

InShelter, The Stath plays Michael Mason, a former MI6 operative who's living in retirement on an isolated island, away from everyone. His only contacts are a man (Michael Shaeffer), who brings him supplies, and the man's niece, Jessie (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), who doesn't get along with Mason. When they have an accident in the ocean, Jessie's uncle dies while she's adrift. Mason rescues her, and she realizes he might not be so bad after all.

But when Mason goes to get supplies, a surveillance camera records him and all alarms go off. His old boss, Stephen Manafort (Bill Nighy), has been using a program to monitor people, and he's just confirmed the whereabouts of the former assassin he's been hunting. When nefarious operatives land on the island to get rid of Mason and Jessie, he dusts off his combat skills and defends himself before being forced to escape and fight to protect Jessie at all costs.

While some doubted Statham's action energy in Shelter, the film features the action star in top form. Yes, he's about to turn 59, but that doesn't mean he misses a beat. The Transporter came out 24 years ago, and time does catch up with everyone, but Statham still has the cinematic presence of a leading action star. Ric Roman Waugh's direction—which is better than he often gets credit for—also helps keep Shelter from feeling like a generic film. It is arguably Statham's most serious movie in terms of tone, and one of the best he's made in recent years.

Jason Statham Rules Streaming Despite Box Office Flop

Jason Statham's dominance in the streaming landscape is indisputable. Not only is Shelter rising up the charts, but other titles like A Working Man and The Beekeeper also remain among the most popular streaming titles. The 2026 thriller comfortably sits at No. 1 on Starz, and is also now fighting its way up the ranks on Prime Video. The action thriller now sits at No. 3, with more recent titles such as Project Hail Mary and The Sheep Detectives staying on top. Statham's A Working Man is No. 5 on the same list.

Unfortunately, this doesn't reflect how Shelter performed at the box office. While the likes of such recent hits such as The Beekeeper grossed more than $162 million against a $40 million budget, while A Working Man earned $89 million from a $40 million production budget, Shelter only managed to surpass the $53 million mark. With a hefty budget of $50 million, that makes Statham's latest a box office flop. Hopefully, Mutiny becomes a bigger theatrical hit, and Statham can reclaim the box office crown while holding tightly onto the streaming one.
