Taking over Academy Award-winner and Hollywood icon Denzel Washington, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II leads Man on Fire, which adapts both the novel of the same name and its first sequel, "The Perfect Kill" by A. J. Quinnell. Haunted by his past and hunted by his enemies, former Special Forces veteran John Creasy fights to keep a teenage girl, Poe (Billie Boullet), alive on the deadly streets of Rio de Janeiro after her entire family is killed. Unleashing his particular set of skills and heading back into a deeply personal war he wanted to leave behind, Creasy hunts down those responsible while trying to keep Poe safe.
Since making its debut on Netflix back in April, Man on Fire has been an explosive hit for the streamer, with the newly released "What We Watched the First Half of 2026" report revealing that the action thriller series stands proudly at #8 in the top 10 most-watched shows. Garnering a massive 40 million views, Man on Fire has beaten its fellow action thriller hit The Night Agent, which is ranked #10, with the likes of Harlan Coben series' Run Away and I Will Find You, Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and the Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson-led His & Hers topping the rankings with a monumental 104 million views.
'Man on Fire' Is One of 2026's Biggest Hits Despite Divisive Reviews
Man on Fire has, in fact, been adapted twice before for the big screen. The first was in 1987 and starred Daredevil’s Scott Glenn as main character John Creasy, with the second in 2004 being far more familiar to audiences and starring Denzel Washington under the direction of the late, great filmmaker Tony Scott. The Washington/Scott effort remains a favorite among fans of both the actor, the director, and the genre, and while it proved divisive at the time, that adaptation of Man on Fire is hailed as one of the creative pair's best thanks to its rapid-fire editing and a captivating performance from Washington.
Much like its Washington-led predecessor, Netflix's Man on Fire also divided critics and audiences after landing respective scores of 58% and 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. And, much like what came before, the action thriller outing is elevated by the central star, with critics praising Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for reaching "new emotional and action-packed heights" with a "devoted and unflinching performance." All of which has now resulted in one of the biggest Netflix smash hits of 2026.
