New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole has had some ups and downs since returning from Tommy John surgery earlier this season. However, he looked like the Cy Young pitcher he once was on Wednesday against his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. While Cole did surrender three earned runs (two home runs), the right-handed hurler struck out 11 hitters across seven innings of work on the mound. According to Jorge Castillo of ESPN, Cole struck out 11 batters for the first time since 2023 on Wednesday.
Cole, 35, now holds a 3.92 ERA across 11 outings. He has recorded 66 strikeouts in his 62 innings on the mound as well.
The Yankees are going to need Cole to continue to pitch at a high level as they push toward the postseason. He does not have to be the same dominant caliber of ace he once was since Cam Schlittler has emerged as one of the best pitchers in the sport, but New York is obviously still hopeful that Cole can be reliable.

Returning from Tommy John surgery and immediately finding success is a difficult thing to do. Cole is beginning to find his rhythm on the mound now that he’s been back for a while. He should only continue to improve as he makes more starts. Cole may be completely ready to go by the postseason, and he will likely be more fresh than many other arms after missing the first portion of the season.
The Yankees were defeated 5-3 in their first game of their doubleheader against the Pirates on Wednesday, however. They will attempt to bounce back in the second contest as Max Fried makes his return from injury.
