This season, the San Antonio Spurs saw themselves reach the NBA Finals for the first time since they won the NBA Championship back in 2014. While they fell short at the hands of the New York Knicks, much of San Antonio’s success can be credited to the play of Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs star finished his third season in the NBA putting up monster numbers, including leading the league in blocks for the third consecutive season. He became just the third player alongside Dikembe Mutombo and Marcus Camby to lead the NBA in blocks for three straight seasons. At the height of his powers, however, Wembanyama likely won’t be relinquishing that crown anytime soon.
On Wednesday morning, Wembanyama was named the cover athlete for the all new NBA 2K27, which is set to release later this fall. He joined Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and former Chicago Bulls great Derrick Rose as cover athletes for editions of the video game.

Wembanyama became the first player in San Antonio Spurs franchise history to be named cover athlete in the game’s 27-year history, dating back all the way to 1999. Hall-of-Fame players have come through the Spurs franchise over the years like David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard, but none of them were ever named cover athlete for the NBA 2K franchise.
Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant has the most appearances ever on NBA 2K with six, followed by Allen Iverson and Michael Jordan each at five. After that, Shaquille O’Neal has four, Kevin Durant has three, and LeBron James has two.
The 2025-26 regular season saw Victor Wembanyama average 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steal, and 3.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.2 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from three.
The Spurs fell in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, losing the series 4-1 despite leading the series for a whopping 72 percent of the minutes played.
In a fun little aside, Wembanyama also became the first player to have his teammates on the cover with him, as Spurs guards Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle can be seen celebrating with him. The photo was taken from the Spurs’ contest against the Phoenix Suns that saw Victor Wembanyama hit the game winner with one second left.
