The Yankees appointed Spencer Jones as the 27th man for Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Pirates. It is a temporary move, but it gives the organization another look at a young outfielder who keeps sitting close to the next decision.

Jones was optioned to Scranton on July 4. Now he is back in the big-league group because the doubleheader creates an extra roster spot. I like the timing for him. New York gets a useful body for two games, and Jones gets another chance to show that the bat is closer than the current depth chart says.

Yankees just gave Jones another look

The 27th-man label matters. This is not a permanent promotion, and it does not mean the Yankees have solved the outfield while Aaron Judge works his way back. It does put Jones in the room again, around the coaches and players who will decide how much he belongs in the second half.

Spencer Jones has a .848 career minor-league OPS with 83 home runs in 413 games. The Yankees keep waiting to see that production translate. The power is not a theory. The question is whether the at-bats become consistent enough for the club to trust him against major-league pitching.

The Yankees need to see what sticks

Cody Bellinger and Jasson Dominguez give the Yankees other outfield options, but the club has spent much of the summer searching for more dependable offense. Jones does not need to win the job in one day. He needs to make the next call-up easier to justify.

If he gets a start and handles the moment, the front office has another internal option for the weeks ahead. If he looks overmatched, the Yankees learn that too. Either way, the 27th-man spot is useful because it turns a roster rule into a real evaluation.

For now, Jones needs another chance, better at-bats, and a reason for the Yankees to stop treating him like a prospect who is always one adjustment away.
