The Yankees still do not have Aaron Judge back on the field, and the latest update did not give them a clean timetable. Judge’s rib is healing, but he has not been cleared to resume baseball activities.
That puts the front office in an uncomfortable spot. The club can plan around Judge returning later this season, but it cannot build the entire deadline around a date nobody has been given.
Judge has not played since May 31, and the Yankees have had to spread his at-bats across a changing outfield group. Aaron Judge is the best hitter in the lineup when healthy. Replacing that production internally is not a serious plan.
The Yankees can wait for their captain and still add help. They just have to decide whether the next few weeks are about surviving or making sure the roster is strong enough for October.
NY Yankees cannot wait forever
The injury changes the deadline board even if Judge never appears in a trade conversation. New York needs enough offense and outfield coverage to get through the gap, especially if the recovery takes longer than the optimistic version of the schedule.
I would not make a panic move for a name. I would make a clean move for a player who can take real at-bats now and still help when Judge returns. That could mean another outfielder, a right-handed bat, or a player who gives the Yankees flexibility at more than one spot.
Judge’s absence also makes Spencer Jones more interesting, which is part of why the 27th-man decision matters. Jones is not replacing the captain, but the Yankees need to know whether he can give them useful innings while the roster waits.
The captain’s return cannot be the whole plan
The Yankees should be hopeful about Judge’s recovery. They should not confuse hope with roster planning. If he returns on schedule, added depth still helps. If he misses more time, the need becomes obvious.
The deadline answer should be built around both outcomes. Waiting for Judge is reasonable. Waiting to improve the team because Judge might come back is where the Yankees can get themselves in trouble.
