When people think about the Appalachian Mountains, their minds would often drift to unexplained sightings of cryptids. But Sparrow (@jbird_93) had a far more unsettling encounter in her Airbnb that involved no ghosts.
Sparrow went on TikTok to talk about the Airbnb she rented in the Appalachian Mountain area of Virginia. She has been staying in the rental for a few days and livestreaming at night. Everything seemed to be going as planned until she met the owner of the Airbnb.
She had her two dogs with her at the time, Dakota and Harley. Sparrow was used to Dakota being timid around strangers, but Harley, her friendly dog, started growling and snarling at the man.
“Now, mind you, I thought this guy was just a mountain man,” Sparrow said. She assumed that the man was just awkward because he had been alone for a stretch of time. Even service workers have their odd moments, like this waitress from Texas Roadhouse who kept speaking before realizing that she was serving deaf people.
So, Sparrow didn’t think much of it when the owner started indulging in a bit of dark humor during their conversation. She even said that she could relate, claiming she has dark humor as well.
“But how many times do you need to make jokes about where you’ve hid bodies?” Sparrow revealed that the man had been making jokes about hiding a woman’s body. By the third time he cracked a joke about hiding a woman’s body in his fields, Sparrow started to feel uncomfortable. She felt like something was off about the man, but she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what.
The man ended the conversation and said that he had to work in his fields. Sparrow tried not to overthink, but her curiosity got the best of her.
Were there skeletons in that Airbnb?
She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong, so Sparrow decided to do some snooping around the rental. There was an upstairs room that the man prohibited her from entering. After having a conversation about hidden bodies, she decided to open the forbidden door.
Sparrow went in the room, and she started snooping through boxes. With the man away, it seemed like the perfect time to do some digging. At first, all she found were old items, envelopes that may contain financial information, and some folded curtains.
There seemed to be nothing special until she stumbled upon a box within a box. The smaller box had a key hole, which she thought was locked. But then it easily opened.
At first, she thought it contained jewelry. But upon opening the box, the hair at the back of her neck stood up.
She saw human, adult teeth in the box. Sparrow estimated that there were at least 50 pieces contained in that box.
Upon her discovery, Sparrow abruptly made the decision to pack up, get her dogs, and leave the Airbnb.
“I’m gonna call the police,” Sparrow said. In a separate video, Sparrow said that authorities are conducting an investigation on the Airbnb she stayed at. However, the cops gave a non-committal response as to whether or not they’ll keep her posted about the findings.
Regardless, it seems that trusting her dogs and her instincts has gotten Sparrow out of a deadly scenario. It’s better to escape a bad situation than end up in a true crime documentary.
