Whether it’s high sugar content or too much caffeine, popular drinks could be more dangerous than you think.
You probably see advertisements or social media videos about new drinks regularly, whether those are drinks from a restaurant, a can, or a recipe that’s been created and shared online. However, drinks that have been popular in recent years are trending towards being unhealthy in dangerous ways, and that trend doesn’t look like it’s stopping.
Panera famously made the news for the company’s charged lemonades, which were at the center of lawsuits that blamed them for two deaths and two cardiac injuries. While Panera stopped selling charged lemonades well over a year ago, other drinks have been appearing that come with their own risks.
New and Popular Drinks Contain Risky Amounts of Caffeine
Drinks usually don’t contain a risky amount of both sugar and caffeine, but too much of either can be rough on your body, which can be seen in the Panera charged lemonade lawsuits. When it comes to caffeine, the Mayo Clinic states that under 400mg per day is safe for most adults. However, it also notes that teens and young adults should be careful with caffeine amounts, and children should avoid caffeine intake.
Popular energy drink brand Alani Nu contains 200mg of caffeine in a 12 oz can, and a lawsuit in Texas blames the drink for the death of a teen. Given the information from the Mayo Clinic, it only takes two cans of Alani Nu to reach the safe daily limit for caffeine.

If you look at TikTok, you’ll find users like taelamarkee, who documented her experience of being impacted after drinking a small amount of an Alani Nu. Then, you have users such as erinadorn, who ended up having kidney issues from the energy drinks.
Alani Nu isn’t the only energy drink that can end up being dangerous, as other brands can have 120mg of caffeine or higher as well, but the popularity of the brand means that content about the impact people have felt from it is easy to find.
A Sweet Obsession is Forming for Beverages
Sweet drinks aren’t new either, but new offerings seem to be trying to outdo themselves on how much sugar can be put in one drink. According to the American Heart Association, men can have up to 36 grams of added sugar per day, and women can have up to 25 grams. However, World Population Review finds that Americans consume 126.4 grams of sugar per capita each day.
Crumbl has started selling dirty sodas, and the amount of sugar some contain is far above the recommended daily value, reaching up to 186 grams of sugar depending on what you get. Joey_wellness on Instagram goes over some of these drinks, including the Crazy Cousins option that has been getting social media attention.

Crumbl is far from the only company selling drinks with high levels of sugar, as a medium birthday cake shake from Dutch Bros contains 132 grams of sugar, at Dunkin a medium mocha swirl coffee chiller with skim milk has 118 grams of sugar, and at Starbucks a grande caramel Frappuccino has 54 grams of sugar.
While it’s safe to indulge every once in a while, regularly consuming too much sugar or caffeine can impact your health. You can find nutritional information for most food and beverage sellers on their websites.
