For the first time in his Major League career, Bobby Witt Jr. is heading to the injured list.
The Kansas City Royals announced that their superstar shortstop has been placed on the 10-day injured list with back tightness, bringing an end to one of baseball’s most remarkable streaks of durability. The injury was suffered against the San Diego Padres over the weekend.
For some players, a stint on the IL is just another part of a long season. For Witt, it’s something entirely new.
Since making his MLB debut, Witt has built a reputation as one of the game’s true iron men. Much like Hall of Famers and Legends Lou Gehrig and Cal Ripken Jr., the Royals’ franchise cornerstone has made himself available virtually every day, rarely needing time off despite playing one of the sport’s most demanding positions. That durability has become one of his greatest strengths.
While Witt’s elite power, speed, and defense have made him one of baseball’s brightest stars, his ability to stay on the field has been just as valuable. Availability is often overlooked when evaluating players, but Witt has consistently given Kansas City a dependable presence in the lineup every single day. Now, the Royals will have to move forward without him, at least temporarily.
The encouraging news is that the injury has been described as back tightness rather than something more serious. Even so, back injuries can be tricky, and Kansas City will likely take a cautious approach with its franchise player rather than risk aggravating the issue.
The Royals know their long-term success depends on a healthy Bobby Witt Jr., and giving him the time he needs to recover is the smart decision. While his first trip to the injured list is an unfortunate milestone, Kansas City will hope it’s also a brief one. The Royals aren’t going anywhere this season anyway.
