Rory McIlroy had earlier taken a shot at Bryson DeChambeau following the LIV Golf star’s controversial two-shot penalty after the second round of The Open Championship. McIlroy had suggested that DeChambeau unnecessarily prolonged the incident by engaging in a lengthy confrontation with rules officials after being approached about a potential violation.
But well, Scotti Scheffler has a vastly different opinion on the matter, claiming ahead of the 3M Open that he simply does not believe in golf rivalries, per a post on X by Flushing It.
“I felt like when I played basketball there would always be rivalries in basketball because you’re going to play defense against a person and that is much more personal in a sense like because I’m actively trying to stop — like if you and I were going to go out and play one-on-one, like it would turn into a rivalry because I’m actively trying to stop what you’re doing, but in golf, we’re always competing against ourselves on the golf course,” he said.
Scheffler claimed that the only rivalry that he could personally think of was against the golf course.
“I’ve never been a big fan of personal jabs. I don’t think that rivalry is a big thing in golf just because, like I said, my biggest rivalry week in and week out is the golf course.”
The controversy began after DeChambeau completed his second round at Royal Birkdale while sitting just one shot behind the tournament lead. The review developed into an extended on-course discussion, with DeChambeau returning to the site to recreate the motion in question before eventually being assessed a two-shot penalty.
Regardless, New Zealand’s Ryan Fox won The Open Championship, securing his maiden major title at Royal Birkdale while edging out runner-up Cameron Young by a single stroke.
