Marvel Studios on Monday released the first full trailer for "Avengers: Doomsday," offering an early glimpse at Robert Downey Jr.'s turn as villain Doctor Doom and confirming Chris Evans' Steve Rogers will return to wield Mjolnir alongside Chris Hemsworth's Thor.
The roughly two-and-a-half-minute trailer arrived on YouTube and other platforms five days before Marvel's Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, scheduled for July 25. The early release surprised some fans who had expected the studio to save the footage for the convention.
The trailer follows four brief character-focused teasers Marvel released between December 2025 and January 2026, which spotlighted Rogers, Thor, the X-Men and the Wakandans without showing Downey's character. Marvel first revealed footage of Downey as Doom at CinemaCon in April.
In the new trailer, Doom warns of an approaching, unspecified threat that will force the Avengers into "an unthinkable decision." Downey performs the role with a heavy Eastern European accent, distinguishing Doom from Tony Stark, the Marvel hero he played from 2008 to 2019. In one sequence, Doom stops Thor's axe, Stormbreaker, with apparent ease.
"Avengers: Doomsday" is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, marking their first Marvel film since "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. In recent comments, the Russos said the new film would not lean on the studio's earlier "Avengers" movies.
"We are back to phase zero," the directors said. "This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn't leaning on anything from the past."
The film unites heroes from three different corners of Marvel's multiverse: the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, alongside the Wakandans and the group known as the New Avengers. The trailer shows Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto, reprising roles they originated in Fox's "X-Men" films, now dressed in comic-accurate costumes rather than their earlier black leather uniforms. Other X-Men actors appearing include James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
Additional cast members shown in the trailer include Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. According to Marvel, more than 30 actors appear in the film overall, drawing from prior Marvel Cinematic Universe releases and Fox's X-Men franchise, which Disney acquired in 2019.
Not shown in the trailer, despite fan speculation fueled by merchandising, were Spider-Man, Wolverine, Deadpool, Daredevil and Ghost Rider.
The film is set roughly 14 months after the events of "Thunderbolts*" (2025), a period in which the Avengers have lost several of their founding members, including the original Iron Man, Steve Rogers' first stint as Captain America, and Black Widow. Reduced in number, the team must again rally to face Doom, who by the end of the trailer is shown commanding an army of Sentinels, robotic characters drawn from the X-Men comics, while telling the assembled heroes, "One day you will forgive me."
Marvel Studios also opened ticket sales Monday for Infinity Vision, a certified premium large-format theatrical presentation the studio says offers "bigger, brighter and more immersive screens." The trailer is set to run in theaters alongside "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."
The studio has set an official runtime of 165 minutes, or 2 hours and 45 minutes, placing "Doomsday" between "Avengers: Infinity War" (149 minutes) and "Avengers: Endgame" (181 minutes) in length.
"Avengers: Doomsday" was written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with a score by Alan Silvestri, who has composed music for the "Avengers" franchise since "Infinity War." Production took place from April to September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional filming in Bahrain.
The film is scheduled for release in theaters Dec. 18, 2026. It will be followed by "Avengers: Secret Wars," also directed by the Russo brothers, in a subsequent release.
