Matt Damon might be the lead in the new historical epic The Odyssey, but he's always working on multiple projects. His longtime action franchise, Jason Bourne, just got a massive update.
Jason Bourne 6 has been stuck in development hell for 10 years but things are finally moving forward. In June 2026, Damon confirmed there is interest in the sixth film, and that he was open to hearing plot ideas. In a new appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Damon confirmed Jason Bourne 6 is happening and revealed the new director.
Jason Bourne 6 Undergoes Major Shakeup
The action franchise, based on Robert Ludlum's character from the same franchise, has been around for over two decades. The franchise kicked off in 2002, and has had several directors. The first installment had Doug Liman at the helm, with Paul Greengrass directing the second, third, and fifth entries. Tony Gilroy directed the fourth installment, the only one that didn't feature Damon.
The actor refused to appear in the film if Greengrass didn't direct it, and seemed decided to reunite for a sixth movie. However, things are now different. The last attempt was in 2023, when Edward Berger was attached as director.
During the new interview, Damon confirmed the All Quiet on the Western Front helmer is still attached to a potential Jason Bourne 6. "I'm talking to a great director named Ed Berger. He did All Quiet on the Western Front. He's a wonderful director, and we're talking about it. We're just trying to figure out. We're trying to nail the story down because I'd love to do it."
He continued, "It's just that thing where, you know, if we do it, we want it to be like the first three. And it's tough, because it's not built like a James Bond, where every movie is its own mission and people can even change the character, you know, the person playing Bond. It's a linear story, so it makes it more challenging to do a sequel where you're giving people what they want but also enough new stuff. It's a tricky one."
Damon added, "I hope we can crack it. I think we have a line of sight on how to do it."
During the same interview, Damon also addressed a new potential return to the Ocean's franchise. "It takes a lot for those things to cohere. Because it's just everybody's schedules. You gotta get everything right. I think they're probably close on that one. It would be a lot of fun, too. I mean, I love those guys."
Jason Bourne Was a Hit Franchise
Matt Damon is a certified movie star. He has an Oscar for the Best Screenplay for 1997's Good Will Hunting, which he shares with co-star and frequent collaborator Ben Affleck, and is one of the most popular actors of all time, highlighted by his recent The Odyssey release.
The Jason Bourne franchise was a major commercial success for Damon, as it grossed $1.66 billion worldwide against a joint budget estimated at around $500 million, just enough to be profitable. The only film that didn't exceed expectations was the fourth one, which grossed $280.3 million against a $125 million budget, and didn't feature Damon.
The first three films are all Certified Fresh, with the last two both scoring below the 60% mark from both critics and audiences. Even so, the long wait between installments could end up taking the franchise back to its glory days.
