The SEGA Dreamcast spelled the end of SEGA's console era, but its own lifespan still isn't truly over. While major publishers abandoned the system decades ago, smaller developers have revisited it repeatedly for some interesting Dreamcast releases.
These days, the Dreamcast is home to more modern games like Pier Solar and the Great Architects, Xeno Crisis, and the online multiplayer title Driving Strikers, along with modern ports of classic games like the 1992 cinematic platformerFlashback. A new title slated for release, however, might have them all beat as a game designed for the Dreamcast in every way.
This month, Indie developer Story Bird Studios released a reveal trailer for the survival horror title White Creek, available on Julien Rocca's YouTube channel. The trailer focuses on unsettling energy and a remote, snowbound town, cutting between clips of maggots, zombie-like enemies, and a brief snippet of dialogue referring to the "sick town" of White Creek.
The Kickstarter page for White Creek stresses that "White Creek isn't a game 'inspired by the Dreamcast'," but "a game designed for it, from day one." It's attempting to make full use of the system's capabilities, with complex 3D environments and extensive use of bespoke, fixed camera angles in the style of survival horror games of the time. At a glance, this immediately sets the game apart from most indie Dreamcast titles, which are frequently designed for less powerful systems like the Genesis and simply ported to the Dreamcast.
Retro horror has become a huge part of the modern indie gaming scene, but White Creek's focus on the Dreamcast could give it a unique edge. The system was the original home for Resident Evil — Code: Veronicaand the similarly snowy survival horror title D2. As the first sixth-generation console, predating the PlayStation 2 by well over a year, it was the perfect system to open up new opportunities for immersive experiences that still worked within the confines of the era.
White Creek certainly wears some inspirations on its sleeve, but they're all pretty attractive selling points, like the undeniable Twin Peaks-ness of it all. As for its own spin on the genre, the YouTube description focuses on the choice between mowing down enemies with firepower or using the protagonist's psychic powers to exorcise possessed enemies.
If you don't have a SEGA Dreamcast, White Creek will also be coming to PS4/5, Switch 1/2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. If you do, though, the right choice seems obvious.
