All the reason anyone needs to understand why Doctor Doom is considered the ultimate Marvel villain lies in the name. Who wants to mess with a person who has a certified doctorate in ensuring one's tragic fate?
Then again, past evidence has shown that it helps to keep even the most iconic comic book characters fresh by offering them a new alias, or even just a nickname for kicks. It appears that Marvel has presented a perfect one for the dastardly foe.
Spider-Man Calls Doctor Doom "Captain Latveria"
Marvel released a preview for the first issue of the upcoming comic, Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse, which sees Doctor Doom leading a team of heroes, villains, and anti-heroes against pop culture's most famous monster and Knull. One of these warriors is Miles "Spider-Man" Morales, who calls his new commanding officer as "Captain Latveria."
The webslinger's cheeky comment refers to the fact that the character, a native of the fictional country of Latveria and who is otherwise known as Victor von Doom, is taking on the unusual task of spearheading an initiative that actually benefits the world (or multiple worlds, in this case) as the leader of his "Avengers of Doom," as he calls it. In other words, he is assuming a position usually occupied by one Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America.
It is, admittedly, a pretty clever alternative moniker that hopefully sticks for at least as long as this crew — also consisting of Kang the Conqueror, The White Queen, Human Torch, Robbie "Ghost Rider" Reyes, Man-Thing, The Punisher, and Herr Kagelmacher — is involved in an interdimensional war with an iconic kaiju. Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse, the follow-up to Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe and Godzilla: Infinity Roar, makes the eponymous lizard more threatening than usual by equipping it with Wolverine-style retractable claws.
The crossover event is written by Gerry Duggan, who is known most prolifically as a Deadpool writer, but also acclaimed for collaborating with artist Phil Noto on Image Comics' Eisner Award-nominated, sci-fi reimagining of The Odyssey, The Infinite Horizon. Javier Garron of The Uncanny X-Men fame illustrates, and the colorist is David Curiel.
Doctor Doom Comes To The MCU In Avengers: Doomsday
It is less likely that the "Captain Latveria" joke will make its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. However, Doctor Doom is speedily making his long-awaited full appearance in the beloved franchise soon.
Victor von Doom will serve as the main antagonist of the aptly titled Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026. Little more has been revealed about the plot, but it does involve heroes from three different realities in the Marvel Multiverse, including the cast of 2025's The Fantastic Four: First Steps and heroes from the Fox-era X-Men movies, coming together to contend with a dangerous catastrophe.
The first full-length trailer for Avengers: Doomsday recently dropped, showing these familiar faces interacting with one another and a closer look at Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, following his brief cameo in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps with his back to the camera.
The highly anticipated film also sees the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, and plenty more. It also marks the franchise return of Anthony and Joe Russo, who direct from a script by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron.
Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #1 hits the shelves on July 22, 2026.
