The 2027 model brings new versions, a green body color, and additional safety systems without major technical changes.
Mazda has introduced the 2027 model year MX-5, continuing the development of one of the longest-running sports cars on the market. Instead of major changes, the new version brings a series of smaller improvements, including the special Yakudo edition, upgraded Homura equipment, a new body color, and additional safety systems.
The MX-5 has been on the market since 1989, and Mazda says that more than 1.25 million units have been produced to date. More than 404,000 vehicles have been delivered in Europe, allowing the MX-5 to maintain its status as the world’s best-selling two-seat sports car.
The history of the model
The history of the model began ten years before its debut, when American automotive journalist Bob Hall suggested to then Mazda research and development head Kenichi Yamamoto the creation of an affordable, lightweight roadster inspired by classic British sports cars. That idea resulted in a model that marked the return of affordable open-top sports cars at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show.
The current fourth generation continues to follow the model’s original philosophy: a compact design, low weight, excellent weight distribution, rear-wheel drive, and a manual transmission. Mazda emphasizes that each generation has focused on gradual improvements while preserving the characteristics that define the MX-5.
For the 2027 model year, Mazda introduced the special Yakudo edition, available exclusively as a Soft Top. It features silver exterior details and an Alcantara-covered interior. At the same time, the Homura trim level has been upgraded with suspension improvements and design changes aimed at giving the car a sportier character.
The lineup is also expanded with a new Zinc Green metallic paint option, while the Driver Attention Alert system will now come as standard equipment on all versions.
Mazda has not announced any powertrain changes so far. According to published data, the 2027 MX-5 has combined fuel consumption of 6.1 l/100 km and CO? emissions of 139 g/km according to the European WLTP cycle.
The new model continues the evolution of one of the most famous roadsters on the market, keeping the proven formula while adding a limited number of technical and design updates.
