It’s a new era for the New York Giants with John Harbaugh taking over on the sidelines. It would be too much to say that there is an optimistic feeling about a team that has had just one postseason appearance in the last nine seasons, but the atmosphere is decisively stronger with an established head coach in charge of player deployment.
If the Giants are going to become competitive this year, much of their development will depend on the performance of second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart. The quarterback flashed plenty of his talent and ability as a rookie, and that was fine for creating highlight-film type of plays. Harbaugh is well aware of what Dart accomplished last season and he wants the quarterback to build off of that. Dart completed216 of 339 passes for 2,272 passing yards with 15 TDs and 5 interceptions along with 487 rushing yards, a 5.7 yards per carry mark and 9 rushing TDs
The head coach has tried to impress that there’s a lot more to being a successful quarterback than creating magical moments. Instead, it’s about playing consistently for 60 minutes and moving on from the big play to one that helps keep the offense alive to complete a pass or run for a first down on the next play.

If Dart understands that he doesn’t have to hit a home run on every play, the Giants have a better chance of winning and possibly gaining a playoff spot. The QB1 needs to know that it is about putting the team in a position to make the next play — not just making the highlight-film play.
There is much more to the Giants season than the growth of their young quarterback, but that is a vitally important development. Harbaugh is looking for players that will play according to his standards.
Running back Devin Singletary could have a hard time holding on to his position
Harbaugh is eventually going to remake the Giants roster in an image that he prefers. He is going to fill his team with players that compete in the manner that he knows he can go to battle with.
That means that there may be certain players who are lower on the depth chart that will get a chance to move up over established veterans or player that are perceived as better. The players on the Giants roster will have to prove themselves to a coach who has delivered a Super Bowl triumph and has been a consistent winner.
However, as the Giants prepare for the start of camp, it may be very difficult for running back Devin Singletary to maintain his spot on the roster.
It looks like Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy are both ahead of Singletary on the depth chart. Skattebo was on track to lead the Giants in rushing last year before his season came to an end as a result of an ankle injury.
Skattebo played 8 games last season and he ran for 410 yards with an average of 4.1 yards per carry and 5 touchdowns. He figures to be the mainstay of the offense.
Tracy ended up leading the Giants with 740 rushing yards and averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Singletary played in all 17 games for the Giants last season and he finished with 437 yards, with an average of 3.7 yards per carry and 5 touchdowns. He played in more than twice as many games as Skattebo, but only outgained him by 27 yards.
Harbaugh likes power running backs, and Singletary does not appear to qualify at 5-7 and 203 pounds. Skattebo is 5-11 and 215 pounds while Tracy checks in at 5-11 and 210. Those two have more of the size that Harbaugh prefers.
Big-name receivers are likely to be key to the offense
The Giants have the potential to develop an explosive passing game. Much of this will have to do with the maturity of Dart. If he can stay calm and take advantage of his opportunities, he has a slew of dynamic receivers that can change the game in the Giants’ favor.
Malik Nabers returns from his torn ACL and he is a major threat when he is in the lineup. He is joined by rookie Malachi Fields and Darius Slayton. The Giants have also added JuJu Smith-Schuster and Odell Beckham Jr. Harbaugh also has Isaiah Likely in the lineup at tight end, and he will clearly play a key role after his successful run in Baltimore.
This could be very bad news for Jalin Hyatt. He has been with the Giants for three seasons and he has not proven himself to this point. Hyatt played in 17 games as a rookie and caught 23 passes for 373 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, he has caught just 13 passes for 97 yards in the last two seasons.
Hyatt will have to have a brilliant performance in training camp if he is going to have any chance of making the team. It is unlikely at best.
