Framber Valdez’s start for the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night was short — and brutal.
Valdez failed to get out of the first inning of his start versus the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago, as the home team unloaded on offense against the two-time All-Star hurler.
Just 0.2 innings into his start, Valdez was pulled from the mound after allowing six earned runs on five hits with two walks issued and just a strikeout across 42 pitches. Detroit never recovered from that brutal first inning, as the Tigers ended up losing the game to the tune of an 11-2 score.

For Valdez, it was just the second time in his career in the big leagues that he was not able to complete an inning of a start, as noted by Talkin’ Baseball on X, formerly Twitter.
Valdez’s atrocious performance came on the heels of another start where he appeared to have turned the corner just before the MLB All-Star break. The former World Series champion pitcher surrendered five earned runs on nine hits in a loss to the Texas Rangers on the road on July 2 before limiting the Athletics to just a run on three hits through seven innings in a 4-1 victory at home on July 9.
As it stands, Valdez drops to 5-7 through 20 starts in his first season with the Tigers to go with a 4.57 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.
For the Tigers, the loss set them back in their goals of making the MLB playoffs. They are currently 47-53, 6.5 games out of first place in the American League Central Division.
