New York Giants fans must follow rookie receiver Malachi Fields’ progress this summer as he attempts to crack the regular rotation.

Even the most knowledgeable, tapped-in New York Giants fans may have noticed an odd trend involving rookie receiver Malachi Fields.

In fact, we’re going against that trend solely by talking about him.

Fields has unexpectedly gone completely under the radar this offseason, and that’s neither good nor bad.

As of July 19, the Giants list 14 receivers on their roster, and Fields is among those all but guaranteed to survive final cuts. Barring disaster, Fields should make his NFL debut against the Cowboys in Week 1.

That said, Fields is arguably the receiver worth paying the most attention to during training camp, solely because his role appears so uncertain

We didn’t hear much about Fields during organized team activities, both before and after the Giants added three receivers — most notably Odell Beckham Jr. — in early June.

This time of year is when we’ll hear about which players must prove themselves in camp, whether they’re on their rookie contracts or seasoned veterans still hoping to contribute.

That arguably goes for every receiver on the Giants’ current roster — and yes, we’re including Malik Nabers, because he’s still working his way back from knee surgery.

But it’s hard to imagine any of Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, or Calvin Austin not making the Week 1 roster. Beckham feels assured of a role, too, given his familiarity with John Harbaugh.

Counting Fields, those are almost certainly the six receivers who will be with the team on Sept. 13. Maybe we’ll see Jalin Hyatt or Braxton Berrios stick around on the practice squad or be the final man if Nabers starts the season on injured reserve.

Fields will likely be the only one of those six to get significant preseason playing time, though, and he must maximize those opportunities at all costs.

There is almost zero chance that Nabers plays during the preseason, and giving Slayton anything more than a couple of drives isn’t worth the risk. The key for Beckham is to stay healthy.

No one should count on Fields immediately putting up Rookie of the Year numbers, at least not with how the depth chart presently looks.

But if Harbaugh and Matt Nagy are truly optimistic about Fields’ long-term future, we suggest ensuring he’s a mainstay throughout all three exhibition games.

Such an outlook admittedly sounds obvious, though anyone familiar with the NFL knows things are never that simple.

Between Beckham’s age, Nabers’ knee, and Slayton’s drops, the Giants need to feel at least somewhat comfortable sending Fields onto the field.

The journey officially started in April, but it truly begins when training camp opens next week.
