'You don't even know': Democrat erupts while grilling Trump's UN ambassador on Iran casualties

WASHINGTON, DC: A House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the Trump administration's handling of the Iran conflict erupted into one of its most contentious moments Wednesday, July 22, after Rep Ted Lieu (D-Calif) accused US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz of lacking basic knowledge about American troop casualties.

The exchange began with questions about US military operations in the Middle East but quickly escalated into a heated confrontation, with Lieu repeatedly pressing Waltz on wounded service members and the deployment of US troops in Jordan. The clash culminated in the California Democrat accusing the ambassador of giving Congress false information and demanding his resignation.

Lieu presses on troop casualties during hearing

The confrontation began when Lieu questioned Waltz about casualties stemming from the Iran conflict. Waltz responded that, while he currently serves as US ambassador to the United Nations, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had addressed those issues during testimony the previous day.

Lieu rejected that response, arguing that Waltz's own opening statement had highlighted his work on Iran-related matters at the United Nations, making the topic directly relevant to his responsibilities.

The Democrat repeatedly asked whether US troops remain stationed in Jordan, saying lawmakers owed American service members accurate answers about the risks they face. When Waltz eventually confirmed that troops were deployed there, Lieu shifted his focus back to Iranian missile attacks and the number of wounded personnel.

Hearing becomes increasingly confrontational

The hearing became increasingly confrontational as both men repeatedly spoke over one another. At one point, Waltz told Lieu to "try to get re-elected," prompting the congressman to respond that "November is coming for you and this administration."

Lieu then launched his sharpest criticism, accusing Waltz of not knowing how many US troops had been wounded during the Iran conflict. "You don't even know how many US troops were wounded in this Iran war," Lieu said. "Shame on you for not even knowing basic facts."

He went on to accuse the ambassador of providing false information to Congress and declared that Waltz "should resign." Lieu argued that failing to know the number of wounded service members reflected a lack of concern for American troops serving in the region.

Republicans move to intervene in proceedings

As the exchange grew more heated, a Republican member of the committee interrupted the proceedings, asking that Lieu's remarks be taken down and objecting to what he described as derogatory language directed at a "distinguished ambassador."

The fiery exchange underscored the increasingly partisan scrutiny surrounding the Trump administration's handling of the Iran conflict.

While Democrats sought to portray the administration as unprepared and insufficiently informed about the impact on US forces, Republicans defended Waltz as the hearing briefly descended into procedural disputes alongside the broader debate over America's role in the Middle East.
