One of the most horrifying and publicized cases in British history has been ranked as the No. 1 crime 'That Will Never Be Solved."
Thanks to significant advancements in science, particularly DNA evidence and technology, authorities around the world continue to close countless cold cases that were once deemed 'unsolvable.'
Unfortunately, not all well-documented cold cases are solvable. Many of these cases lack the necessary forensic evidence. As the years go by, investigators and witnesses pass away without a resolution.
MsMojo published a video of "20 Crimes That Will Never Be Solved" on YouTube. Taking the No. 1 spot was the infamous "Jack the Ripper" murder case that haunted London, England, in 1888.
Between Aug. 31 and Nov. 9, 1888, an unknown serial killer murdered five women in Whitechapel in East London, England. The victims were Mary Ann Nichols, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddows, Mary Jane Kelly and Annie Chapman.
The serial killer got its name after the Central News Agency received the infamous "Dear Boss" letter. The writer of the letter claimed responsibility for the five slayings and called himself "Jack the Ripper."
Police never lacked a list of suspects, including convicted serial killer George Chapman, Aaron Kosminski and repeat offender Michael Ostrog.
Jack the Ripper Will Likely Never Be Definitively Solved
DNA technology has been used to capture several well-known serial killers whose identities remained unknown for decades.
In 2018, DNA technology led to the arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo. Thus, the mystery of the Golden State Killer had been solved after evading police for more than four decades. In 2020, he was sentenced to life in prison.
Five years later, police used DNA evidence to arrest Rex Heuermann, ending the search for the Gilgo Beach serial killer after three decades. Last month, he was issued a life sentence.
Unfortunately, there isn't much to work with on the Jack the Ripper case.
Scientists have disputed tests that indicate Kosminski's DNA was on a silk shawl allegedly found beside Eddowes' body. With no definitive DNA evidence, it's unlikely that the case will ever be solved.
