Ed Harris did not hold back while airing how his grievances about his role on Taylor Sheridan‘s Dutton Ranch. The actor plays Everett McKinney on the show and said he feels he was not utilized to his fullest in the first season, which concluded on July 3.
“Midway through the first season, I said, ‘Get me the f**k out of here,’ to tell you the truth,” Harris told Variety. “I didn’t feel I was being used. I felt I was a bit misled. Prior to signing on for it, I was talked quite a bit about what the season was and what my character was going to do and that I was one of the four main characters, and that wasn’t really the case. I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh.'”
Harris has already signed on to star in a second season of the show and revealed that filming begins in February. However, he said he still finds his lack of Season 1 screen time to be “a little frustrating,” adding, “I watched the season and it’s fine. I thought it was pretty good and I felt fine about what I did in it and it seemed like I was relatively important to the story, but the doing of it did not feel that way.”
What “really pissed [Harris] off,” though, was filming a scene singing in a bar that was ultimately cut. “They cut the song out!” he complained. “I’m like, ‘F**k you people.’ That’s all I gotta say.” However, he eventually added, “They said it was too up for the dark ending of that episode. That, to me, was reason enough to say I’m voiding my contract.”
Still, Harris revealed he’s been told that his character “will have a little bit more to do” in Season 2. This echoes what his costars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who also serve as executive producers, previously told TV Insider.
“He’s going to become a very important, integral part of Season 2,” Hauser confirmed. “And for both Kelly and I, obviously, Annette [Bening] is phenomenal, but I cannot wait to work more with [Harris]. He’s such an amazing American actor that I think was used very sparingly this year. We’re going to make sure that he is a big part of helping us moving forward in whatever capacity.”
Reilly added, “I think Season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show. This is not the Beth [Reilly] and Rip [Hauser] show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters, five. Annette Bening and Ed Harris, it’s such a privilege to have them come join our show. I’ve said this before, I feel like they made us legit. We could have just been a little soapy spinoff, and we’re not because of them. We’re a drama, we’re a new show, and it’s got some heavyweights in it. We’re very proud to be working with them.”
