Even characters with relatively little screen time feel fully realized, and it’s easy to imagine an entire film centered on, say, Circe (Samantha Morton), Calypso (Charlize Theron), or even the imposing Agamemnon. Clad in black armor that almost completely covers his face, with a gold “spine” trailing from the back of his helmet, Agamemnon is elusive and stoic—we hear him speak only once, and the context of that lone line is as revealing as his imposing armor.

Who is Agamemnon?

In The Odyssey, Agamemnon is depicted as a formidable figure of few words. The king of Mycenae, Agamemnon marshals the leaders of several Greek kingdoms to wage war on Troy after the disappearance of his brother’s wife, Helen (Lupita Nyong’o). According to Agamemnon and his brother, Menelaus (Jon Bernthal), a Trojan kidnapped Helen, but Odysseus suggests another theory: that Helen ran off with the Trojan of her own accord.

This depiction of Agamemnon and the events surrounding the Trojan War are broadly faithful to Homer’s epics, particularly the Iliad. Agamemnon isn’t a major character in the Odyssey, but he is central to the Iliad, which focuses on his bitter conflict with the warrior Achilles during the final year of the war.

What is Agamemnon’s legacy in Greek literature?

Nolan’s The Odyssey also borrows story elements from later Greek tragedies, including Aeschylus’ Agamemnon — the first play in the Oresteia trilogy — and Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis. According to the myth, Agamemnon angers the goddess Artemis by killing one of her sacred deer. In retaliation, Artemis manipulates the winds so that Agamemnon and his fleet can’t sail to Troy. The seer Calchas tells the king that the only way to appease the goddess is to sacrifice his eldest daughter, Iphigenia.

Aeschylus’ Agamemnon explores what happens when the king returns home from the Trojan War to his wife, Clytemnestra (also played by Lupita Nyong’o in the film), who is also Helen’s sister. Agamemnon believes he’s being welcomed home by a loving wife who has missed him dearly. Instead, Clytemnestra has been plotting his murder to avenge Iphigenia’s death. Other tellings of the myth place greater emphasis on her affair with her lover, Aegisthus — a member of a rival branch of the royal family — and their shared political ambitions, making her motives more complex than revenge alone.

Who plays Agamemnon in The Odyssey?

In Nolan’s film, Agamemnon is played by actor and filmmaker Benny Safdie — though you’d hardly know it since his face is so heavily obscured by the armor, a choice that reinforces Agamemnon’s aloof, imposing presence.

Benny first rose to prominence alongside his brother, Josh. The pair collaborated on a number of acclaimed films, including Heaven Knows What (2014), Good Time (2017), and Uncut Gems (2019). Benny played a supporting role in Good Time, as Pattinson’s cognitively impaired brother.

After Uncut Gems, Benny went on to direct Dwayne Johnson in The Smashing Machine (2025), while Josh earned an Oscar nomination for directing Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme (2025).

One of the more fascinating pieces of lore from Frank Herbert’s Dune series is that the lineages of the great houses—Atreides, Corrino, Harkonnen, et al. —can be traced back thousands of years. In the third novel, Children of Dune, we learn that the surname Atreides derives from the Greek Atreus, who just so happens to be the father of Agamemnon and Menelaus.

Paul’s sister, Alia, who inherited the ancestral memories of her bloodline in utero, can hear Agamemnon speaking to her through her genetic memory and demanding an audience. Herbert doesn’t explore the connection much further, but it’s fitting that Agamemnon and Paul Atreides share a common ancestry: They’re both powerful, deeply flawed rulers whose decisions unleash catastrophic wars.

There’s no telling if this ancient ancestry will be referenced in Dune: Part Three, which arrives in theaters on Dec. 18.
