Robert Pattinson sure has an interesting take on his villainous character in The Odyssey

Pattinson, 40, tells PEOPLE at the July 6 London premiere of Christopher Nolan‘s retelling of Homer’s epic (in theaters now) that his character Antinous is in a “love story” with Anne Hathaway‘s Penelope — despite being the most odious of the suitors she’s trying to avoid.

“I don’t think he’s really the bad guy,” the British star says when asked about playing villains onscreen. “I think he’s just like … It’s a love story!”

Hathaway, 43, plays queen Penelope, who waits on Ithaca for the return of its king, her husband Odysseus (played by Matt Damon). Pattinson, Corey Hawkins, Iddo Goldberg and more play the men eager to inherit the throne from the absent war hero, with Odysseus and Penelope’s son Telemachus (Tom Holland) standing in their way.

What is the dynamic like between Penelope and Antinous, according to Pattinson? “Penelope is just waiting for Antinous to get older,” quips the Twilight alum.

Asked if he enjoys exploring his bad side — as he will again in the upcoming Dune: Part Three — Pattinson says, “I do. I like lowering people’s expectations; that’s always my favorite, that’s always my place to be. Undersell and overdeliver, that’s my motto.”

Hathaway connected off-camera with her suitor, she recently told Entertainment Weekly, not because of their shared history as starring in Batman movies (after her work in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and Pattinson’s 2022 reboot The Batman). “I feel like we bonded over dinner, over pizza… lots of pizza,” Hathaway recalled of her costar.

Nolan’s The Odyssey, also starring Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie and Travis Scott, recently scored the third-largest opening for a movie in the U.S. this year.

At The Odyssey‘s London premiere, Pattinson also had plenty of praise for Zendaya, his costar in a whopping three movies on the 2026 release calendar — The Drama, released in April; The Odyssey; and the third Dune installment (in theaters Dec. 18) — calling her “the best” and “such a great actress.”
