Key Points

  • Actor Luke Wilson admitted that he forgot he played Emmett in Legally Blonde.
  • The star said he told a group of excited children, “No, I’m not Emmett,” at a Mexican restaurant.
  • At the time, Wilson said he thought to himself, “I don’t even know my character’s name!”

Luke Wilson has opened up about being on trial over the true identity of his Legally Blonde character, which he recalled being grilled on — and ultimately forgetting — during a past fan interaction with a group of children.

During a recent appearance on the Out of Order show (watch below), the 54-year-old admitted that he forgot he played a major part in the 2001 comedy classic.

“When the movie came out, I was back in Dallas, I was at this Mexican restaurant, this group of little girls came up,” Wilson remembered. “They were like, ‘Are you Emmett?’ I said, ‘No, I’m not Emmett.’ And then they kinda laughed and skittered back like little birds. They were like, ‘You’re Emmett!’”

He continued, “I was like, ‘Girls, where are your parents? I don’t know who Emmett is and I don’t know what you’re talking about,’” Wilson said. “And then they were like, ‘You were in Legally Blonde!’”

It then dawned on the star that he was indeed Emmett, the love interest of Reese Witherspoon’s lead character, Elle Woods, in the hit film.

“I said, ‘Oh! Emmett!’ I don’t even know my character’s name. And I said, ‘Okay, yes! I’m Emmett! I’m sorry, let’s get a picture!’” the actor recalled.

He went on to compare the interaction to filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining.

“It’s like that scene in The Shining where it’s like, ‘You’re the caretaker here,’ and I’m like, ‘No, I’m not, you’ve got the wrong guy!” finished Wilson.

Despite forgetting his character’s name, Wilson remains a vital part of the Legally Blonde family. Earlier this year, Witherspoon was moved to tears when Wilson left a sweet video message for her to watch during an appearance on Good Morning America shortly after he missed out on attending a June cast reunion event in New York City.

“Every time I see Luke, I start crying because he’s so wonderful and we had so much fun,” Witherspoon said on GMA, raising her hand to her face while tears welled in her eyes.

Wilson and Witherspoon reprised their roles in the movie’s less popular (but still financially successful) sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde.

Witherspoon additionally returned to the franchise to produce the Amazon streaming series Elle, a prequel following Woods through her formative years in high school.
