The Chicago White Sox made a catching change Tuesday after rookie Kyle Teel suffered an ankle injury during Monday night's win over the Texas Rangers. The club placed Teel on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain and recalled Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to take his place on the active roster.
Teel was injured in the second inning of Chicago's 10-3 victory while attempting to apply a tag at home plate on Ezequiel Durán. The 24-year-old rolled his left ankle and had to be helped off the field without putting weight on the leg. He is expected to undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury.
The setback continues an injury-filled season for one of the organization's top prospects. After missing significant time with hamstring and knee injuries earlier this year, Teel had appeared in just 19 games, batting .190 with two home runs and 14 RBIs.
Quero returns to the majors for his second stint of the season after appearing in 55 games for Chicago earlier this year. The switch-hitting catcher slashed .187/.253/.233 with two home runs and 15 RBIs while sharing catching duties.
His promotion gives manager Will Venable another familiar option behind the plate alongside Drew Romo as the White Sox await more clarity on Teel's recovery timeline.
Despite the loss, Chicago remains atop the American League Central with a 53-46 record, holding a 1.0-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians. The White Sox have exceeded expectations under first-year manager Will Venable and remain firmly in the division race.
With the trade deadline approaching, replacing Teel's production will become an immediate priority. For now, the White Sox will rely on Quero and Romo to stabilize the catching position while hoping their rookie backstop avoids a lengthy absence.
