A thin situation at the edge for the New England Patriots will be even thinner when training camp opens this weekend.
The team announced on Tuesday that edge rusher Harold Landry would open training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list, along with reserve tight end C.J. Dippre. Backup running back Terrell Jennings will begin camp on the active/non-football injury list.
That means that none of the three players will be allowed to practice until they come off each list.
Sack leader coming off surgery
Landry is the one of most concern for the Patriots, heading into the 2026 season. He led the Patriots in sacks with 8.5 a year ago, despite having to play through an October knee injury. The Boston College product played 75 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.
He wound up competing in 15 regular season games, a pair of playoff games and the Super Bowl. He did not have a sack in the postseason.
Landry went on to have surgery to repair the knee after the Super Bowl loss to Seattle.
Consistent production in seven seasons
Now 30, Landry is headed into his eighth pro season – seven with the Tennessee Titans and last year in New England. He has averaged 8.4 sacks per season as a pro.
The expectation, according to reports, is that he will take it slow as he works back to full health and still be ready for the season opener in Seattle on Sept. 9.
With rookie second-round pick Gabe Jacas still unsigned and his health situation up in the air, it leaves New England with Dre’Mont Jones and Elijah Ponder with the lead roles in camp, while Bradyn Swinson, Quintayvious Hutchins, Jesse Luketa and Amari Gainer filling out the depth chart.
Two others hoping to return
Dippre, an undrafted free agent a year ago by the Patriots, spent most of the year on the practice squad but did appear in a pair of games in 2025.
In a reserve role last year, Jennings, who has played two pro seasons, carried 23 times in seven games last year, for 73 yards and a touchdown.
