What we know about reported explosion at Tuxedo Motor Sports in Sloatsburg

Ramapo police responded to a reported explosion and structure fire in Sloatsburg Wednesday, July 22, near the Orange-Rockland County border, officials said.

The incident resulted in the closure of Route 17 in the area, an evacuation and one person seriously injured.

Crews from Orange & Rockland were spotted cutting off the power to Tuxedo Motor Sports Wednesday afternoon. As of 2:30 p.m., Route 17 had been reopened in both directions.

What police say happened in Sloatsburg

According to a news release posted to social media by the Ramapo Police Department, crews responded to a reported explosion and active structure fire at around 10:46 a.m. at 265 Orange Turnpike in the Village of Sloatsburg, within the confines of the Town of Ramapo.

Earlier reports had identified the area of the response as the Town of Tuxedo.

Upon arrival, police said the building was engulfed in flames, and all occupants had been evacuated.

One person was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment. According to police, the extent of their injuries is "not currently being disclosed."

"The explosion and resulting fire are not deemed suspicious at this time; however, it is still an active scene and investigation," police said.

Ramapo police were assisted on scene by the Rockland County Sheriff Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Tuxedo Police Department, Sloatsburg Fire Department, Tuxedo FD, Monsey FD, Monroe FD, Mahwah FD, Hillburn FD, Suffern FD Hose Company, Greenwood Lake FD, Washingtonville FD and Woodbury FD.
