A weak tornado likely touched down briefly in Westchester County near the Connecticut border Tuesday afternoon as thunderstorms slammed the region with heavy rain.
Doppler radar showed small debris lofting 3,000 feet into the air or higher in the areas of Purchase and Rye Brook, N.Y. Radar also showed enough rotation to support a weak tornado.
Storm damage reports in the area showed a line of destruction that brought down trees and utility wires as far east as Greenwich.
A tornado watch was issued for Fairfield and New Haven counties during the storms Tuesday.
The National Weather Service's New York office said in a bulletin that it was reviewing damage and radar data with Westchester County Emergency Management.
The thunderstorms moved through Purchase, a hamlet in the town of Harrison, and Rye Brook between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"A final determination of the cause of damage will be made by Wednesday evening," the weather service said.
