The Minnesota Timberwolves have reason for excitement coming into the 2026-27 season due to the new backcourt pairing of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball. The Wolves lost Mike Conley Jr. to the Boston Celtics in free agency, and Dante DiVincenzo is expected to miss most of the year due to the Achilles injury suffered last season. With a need for backcourt help, that’s where Ball comes in.
The Timberwolves got to see their new backcourt in action this week as both Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball took part in a halfcourt shooting contest at the team’s practice facility.
The Wolves are coming off a season in which they won 49 games and finished with the sixth seed in the Western Conference standings. They upset the Denver Nuggets in the opening round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in six games in the Western Conference Semifinals.

This past season, Edwards appeared in 61 games at just about 35 minutes per game. He averaged a career-high 28.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals with splits of 48.9 percent shooting from the field, 39.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 79.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
Ball, on the other had, appeared in 72 games at just about 28 minutes per game. He averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 1.2 steals with splits of 40.7 percent shooting from the field, 36.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 89.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
Among the other moves the Wolves made this offseason were trading Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets in what amounted to a salary dump, and re-signing Ayo Dosumnu, their big trade deadline acquisition.
