The major U.S. airports and airlines, including Delta, saw a surge in cancellations over the weekend. United Airlines also battled a severe tech outage, adding to the already significant weather-related disruptions.
On Sunday, it was yet another chaotic day of travel across the United States, as the world's busiest hubs faced mass delays and cancellations. As a result, passengers experienced frustration due to lengthy delays and long rebooking lines, which further aggravated the disruptions.
America's Busiest Airports Faced Major Disruptions On Sunday
For the second day in a row, U.S. airports faced mass disruptions nationwide. According to FlightAware, there were 9,947 delays within, into or out of the United States on July 19, along with 1,477 canceled flights. A major reason for the disruptions was weather delays, along with scheduling issues caused by the severe weather.
As a result, the busiest hub in the world, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, had the most canceled flights, with 280. It also had the most delays worldwide, totaling 1,179.
All the major airlines were affected by the delays at ATL, but Delta Air Lines was hit the hardest, with 832 delays, nearly half of its volume of flights out of ATL.

Other major airports affected by volume delays and cancellations include Reagan National Airport, Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Philadelphia Airport.
Flights out of Charlotte, Orlando, and Detroit also saw a higher volume of disruptions.
For travelers starting their vacations on the weekend, the last couple of days were chaotic. Particularly on Sunday, travelers reported unexpected delays and cancellations across the U.S.
How Travelers Reacted To The Flight Cancellations On Sunday
Whether the flights were to Charlotte or Tampa, passengers faced frustrating circumstances. DeeDee was a traveler booked on an American Airlines flight from DC to Charlotte. Additionally, delays continued due to mechanical issues. DeeDee took to X to express her frustrations.
"What is going on with @AmericanAir ?? Been flying for 35 years and never heard of this many mechanical issues with every flight around us!! Our flight was diverted from DC to Charlotte heading to Destin, they said cockpit had no AC , yet captain came off not breaking a sweat. Then we find out several people on our flight had theirs cancelled YESTERDAY for mechanical issues. Sitting in Charlotte and there are 2 other destinations next to us that have delays due to mechanical issues!! Tried to get on another flight and those are delayed. This is crazy." DeeDee wrote.
At Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, not only were flights being canceled, but lines for additional aid were adding to flyers' frustration.
Although major airlines provided passengers with rebooking options, this proved to be an issue for many. A Delta traveler stated that neither rebooking option was honored by the carrier.
"Thank you very much @Delta for cancelling our flight from New York to Tampa and then offering us a flight in the past to get us home. But not before offering us a flight from an airport 3 hours away. Stellar customer service," the traveler wrote on X.
Not only was it a tough day for major U.S. airports, but airlines also experienced heavy disruptions throughout Sunday. The major airlines have responded with flexible rebooking at several airports nationwide.
How The Major U.S. Airlines Were Affected By The Severe Disruptions
Delta Air Lines was hit the hardest in terms of canceled flights. Due to disruptions at its major hubs, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, the airline had the most cancellations of any carrier, reaching the 400 mark on Sunday. As for delays, Southwest Airlines had the most, at over 1,706.
U.S. Airlines With The Most Delays On July 19
In response to upcoming disruptions, Delta Air Lines is offering passengers flexible rebooking options. Rebooking is available for July 21 and July 22 flights in the Northeast due to "inclement weather."
The hubs included in the flexible rebooking offer are Boston, MA (BOS), Baltimore, MD (BWI), Washington-Reagan National, DC (DCA), Newark, NJ (EWR), White Plains, NY (HPN), Washington-Dulles, VA (IAD), New York-Kennedy, NY (JFK), New York-La Guardia NY (LGA), and Philadelphia, PA (PHL).
Delta Air Lines also has a separate rebooking offer in place for Atlanta flights due to thunderstorms on July 20.
After a chaotic last 24 hours, the major U.S. airports and airlines will look to limit flight disruptions. With upcoming storms possible in the Northeast, disruptions may continue to increase in the coming days.
