Named after one of Qantas' founders, the aircraft's return marks the end of a fleet-wide restoration program that began after the COVID-19 pandemic grounded the carrier's flagship long-haul aircraft.
Like every other reactivated A380, VH-OQC underwent an extensive engineering overhaul before carrying passengers once again. After its final commercial flight in 2020, the aircraft spent years in long-term storage at Victorville, California, before being transferred to Abu Dhabi for heavy maintenance, system restoration, and a complete refurbishment of its four-class cabin. The work formed part of what Qantas has described as the largest maintenance program in its 105-year history.
The timing of the aircraft's return reflects growing demand across Qantas' long-haul network. A Look Back At VH-OQC's Journey
Delivered to Qantas in December 2008, VH-OQC Paul McGinness spent more than a decade operating the airline's flagship international routes without major incident. Like the rest of the carrier's Airbus A380 fleet, the aircraft was a regular on long-haul services until the COVID-19 pandemic brought global aviation to a near standstill in early 2020.
In June 2020, Qantas announced it would ground around 100 aircraft for up to 12 months, including almost its entire international fleet. At the time, the airline said there was "significant uncertainty" over when travel demand would recover enough to justify returning the A380 to service, while also deferring deliveries of Airbus A321neos and Boeing 787-9s. VH-OQC was sent into long-term storage at Victorville, California, before being transferred to Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport in June 2021, where Etihad Engineering took over the complex task of preparing the aircraft for its eventual return. In total, the superjumbo spent 1,956 days out of passenger service.
Following that, VH-OQC returned to Sydney in December 2025. The aircraft operated its first commercial flight back on December 7 as QF11 from Sydney to Los Angeles.
Inside Qantas' Largest Maintenance Project Ever
Qantas has described the return of its stored Airbus A380 fleet as the largest maintenance program in the airline's 105-year history. Returning a 575-ton aircraft to passenger service after nearly six years in desert storage is far more complex than simply carrying out a routine heavy maintenance check. In total, engineers devoted more than 100,000 labor hours to VH-OQC's reactivation, with teams across Australia, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates working together to restore the aircraft to commercial service.
The work package included comprehensive structural inspections, component replacements, complete systems restoration, and an overhaul of the aircraft's landing gear, which was one of the most specialized and logistically demanding aspects of the project. Engineers also recommissioned hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and avionics systems that had been carefully preserved during storage before conducting extensive ground testing and proving flights to verify the aircraft's performance and ensure it met all regulatory and operational requirements.
The project went beyond engineering alone. Like every other Qantas Airbus A380, VH-OQC received a complete cabin refurbishment and reconfiguration to match the airline's latest long-haul product. The aircraft now features 14 First Class, 70 Business Class, 60 Premium Economy, and 341 Economy seats, for a total capacity of 485 passengers, alongside a refurbished First Class cabin and refreshed upper-deck lounge. Qantas has also introduced a range of premium enhancements across its A380 fleet, including upgraded dining, exclusive Aesop amenity kits, Bollinger champagne, and redesigned First Class sleepwear, ensuring the airline's oldest superjumbos offer an experience consistent with its newest premium standards.
From Desert Storage To The Hangar
Although Qantas originally placed all 12 of its Airbus A380s into long-term storage during the COVID-19 pandemic, not every aircraft made it back into passenger service. Two airframes, VH-OQE and VH-OQF, were dismantled at Victorville, California, with their components used to create a valuable pool of spare parts for the remainder of the fleet. The decision reflected the uncertainty surrounding long-haul travel at a time when airlines around the world questioned whether demand for very large aircraft would ever fully recover.
The airline began reversing that decision in early 2022, when VH-OQB became the first Qantas A380 to return to commercial service on January 11. Over the following three years, another eight superjumbos gradually rejoined the fleet, leaving VH-OQC as the final aircraft awaiting reactivation. While Qantas had initially hoped to have all ten serviceable A380s flying again by the end of 2024, the program was delayed by a worldwide shortage of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capacity capable of handling an aircraft as large and complex as the Airbus A380.
Those delays were not unique to Qantas. Since the pandemic, airlines have kept older aircraft in service for longer than originally planned as manufacturers struggled to deliver new jets on schedule. At the same time, supply chain disruptions and a surge in demand for heavy maintenance created fierce competition for available MRO slots. A Wing Slat Issue After Takeoff
After nearly six years out of passenger service, VH-OQC's return to commercial operations was short-lived. The aircraft operated its first revenue flight as QF11 from Sydney to Los Angeles on December 7, departing Sydney at 6:18 PM local time and arriving at Los Angeles International Airport seven minutes ahead of schedule after crossing the International Date Line. Despite the on-time arrival, passengers reported an eventful journey, with some experiencing an in-flight electrical issue that temporarily affected the seatback entertainment system and seat recline functions.
Following the aircraft's arrival in Los Angeles, engineers discovered that part of a leading-edge wing slat on the left wing had been damaged. Images shared on social media showed a section of the slat missing, prompting Qantas to ground the aircraft for inspections and repairs. As a result, the scheduled return service, QF12 from Los Angeles to Sydney, was canceled while replacement parts were fitted and the aircraft underwent engineering checks. Although visually dramatic, Airbus has previously concluded that this type of damage does not significantly affect lift or the aircraft's overall safety margins, allowing the aircraft to complete its flight safely.
The incident also occurred against the backdrop of a wider issue affecting the Airbus A380 fleet. Earlier investigations by France's Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses (BEA), following an Emirates A380 incident in 2023, identified bonding defects within the composite structure of certain leading-edge slats. Similar findings were later reported on several Singapore Airlines A380s, prompting Airbus to develop additional inspection procedures under the oversight of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). While VH-OQC's slat damage occurred after EASA had published an Airworthiness Directive covering certain A380 slat components, the aircraft was not among those requiring immediate priority inspections, and there is currently no evidence that its damage was caused by the same defect. The exact cause of the damage remains under investigation.
What's Next For The Qantas A380 fleet?
With its return to service complete, VH-OQC is once again playing a key role in Qantas' long-haul network. The aircraft initially served as an operational spare during the 2025 Christmas travel period before being assigned to the airline's daily QF7/QF8 service between Sydney and Dallas/Fort Worth from January 1, 2026. Like the rest of the fleet, it also operates on flagship international routes to Los Angeles, London Heathrow, Singapore, and Johannesburg. As an operational spare, however, VH-OQC can be substituted onto other A380 services at short notice to cover scheduled maintenance or unexpected aircraft unavailability, and has even been used on high-capacity domestic sectors between Sydney and Melbourne.
Despite averaging more than 16 years of age, Qantas' Airbus A380 fleet continues to offer capabilities that no other aircraft in the airline's fleet can match. It is particularly valuable at slot-constrained airports such as London Heathrow, where adding frequencies is often impossible, making larger aircraft the only practical way to increase passenger numbers. The A380 also strengthens Qantas' partnership with American Airlines by providing seamless onward connections from Dallas/Fort Worth to more than 230 destinations across North America.
Although the Airbus A380 is no longer in production, it remains central to Qantas' international strategy for the remainder of this decade. Following extensive cabin refurbishments and one of the most ambitious aircraft reactivation programs in its history, the airline expects the type to continue flying well into the 2030s. Current plans call for the gradual retirement of the fleet from the 2032 financial year, when the aircraft will begin making way for Airbus A350s, which offer lower operating costs and improved fuel efficiency.
