The spokesperson added that the significance of these informal gatherings for the broader peace process is "close to zero."

The public diplomatic reaction follows a July 17 report by the German newspaper Die Zeit, which revealed an unpublicized meeting involving Ronald Pofalla, former chief of staff to ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Matthias Platzeck, former prime minister of Brandenburg. The German figures met with Viktor Zubkov, chair of the board of directors at Gazprom, and Valery Fadeyev, who heads Vladimir Putin's civil society and human rights council.

On July 21, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev confirmed that the meeting took place from July 12 to July 14 without the prior knowledge or involvement of official Baku, adding that the participants discussed pathways to ending the war in Ukraine.
