The depth of Gianni Infantino’s relationship with Donald Trump has drawn scathing criticism, especially after all the controversy at the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup was rocked by controversy after Donald Trump personally phoned FIFA President Gianni Infantino to complain about US striker Folarin Balogun’s red card. FIFA extraordinarily suspended the ban, which as you can imagine, caused global outrage.

Following the tournament, Donald Trump proposed nominating Gianni Infantino as the next UN Secretary-General, praising his sports diplomacy and unique ability to unite global audiences.

However, this has only made the whole situation worse, raising more questions about exactly what Infantino and Trump have up their sleeve.

Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump’s relationship exposed

A report from TalkSPORT has shed more light on the relationship between Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino, which appears to be a lot closer than many people would have thought.

One UEFA insider, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, quipped: “If it was in Gianni’s power to make Trump an honorary World Cup winner, he would have done so already.”

However, it seems to be more of a power play, rather than them being the best of mates.

That dynamic was on full display throughout the tournament. Infantino consistently aligned himself with the Oval Office, even going so far as to co-host a joint World Cup reception at Trump Tower and clearing the way for Trump to hand over the trophy.

For Infantino, maintaining direct access to the most powerful office in the US guarantees political leverage and global visibility. For Trump, sharing the international stage with FIFA’s chief offers a platform that commands global attention.
