A second homecoming to the Cavaliers is definitely on the table for James, who is exploring his options in free agency this summer.

But the Cavs are no longer approaching their team construction with a ‘LeBron or nothing’ mindset, as they have identified a strong alternative.

Cleveland Cavaliers identify Jonathan Kuminga as possible alternative to LeBron James

According to Cleveland Cavaliers insider Chris Fedor, the Cavs are keeping tabs on Jonathan Kuminga and his free agency struggles.

If James snubs the Cavaliers and joins another team instead, the Cavaliers could choose to approach Kuminga, who is currently without a team.

Kuminga is currently a free agent after the Hawks turned down their $24.3 million team option that was part of the contract he signed with the Warriors last season.

Reports suggest that Kuminga wants to make $20 million per season as part of his next contract. But if he fails to find a new team by the time James makes his decision, the Cavaliers could get him for the same $15 million price tag they’re trying to get LeBron James.

Jonathan Kuminga could pay off for Cavaliers long-term, but won’t raise championship ceiling

There is no denying that Kuminga is a bright prospect, and could pay off for the Cavaliers if they develop him the right way.

But trying to sign him as an alternative to LeBron James, who is the main target to try and help the team reach the NBA Finals, is not a well-researched plan.

While Kuminga is a former NBA champion, he played an incredibly limited role on the 2022 Golden State Warriors, as he was just a rookie.

The Cavaliers must decide exactly what they want to do next season, as the two signings will lead them down very different paths.
