Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister has sent an emotional message to Argentina fans after his nation lost the World Cup final to Spain, outlining how much the defeat "hurt" him.
The midfielder played the full 120 minutes in New Jersey against La Roja, as a goalless draw at full-time brought about an extra 30 minutes of action. Argentina, reduced to 10 men through Enzo Fernandez's sending off in stoppage time, struggled to create much of note as Spain proceeded to win through Liverpool-linked forward Ferran Torres' strike.
It was a painful defeat for Argentina in the World Cup final, marred by ugly scenes after the full-time whistle, one that saw plenty of players break down after receiving their silver medals.

Mac Allister was among those to do so, with the Liverpool star taking a few days away before posting his initial reflections on a testing tournament for him and his teammates.
Taking to Instagram, he said: "We were so close… that's why it hurts so much. But no one can take away everything we experienced during this World Cup. What they made us feel is extraordinary.
"We had to suffer, there were adversities, but we overcame them TOGETHER. Let's never forget this, please: TOGETHER we are stronger than anyone.
"There are moments that are forever etched in our lives and in our hearts. Just as I will never forget that day in 2022 when, with our World Cup medals, we walked, cried, and celebrated with our people through the streets of Buenos Aires, this Cup also left us with two unforgettable images that reflect the people's connection to this team and that are a balm to the soul of every Argentinian.
"The first was when, after receiving our runner-up medals, the Argentinians in the stadium began to sing wildly. Family, friends, and fans made any other celebration fade into the background.
"The second was the welcome we received in Buenos Aires. Rain and cold, but with a love for our country and for this National Team that nothing could dim. Excuse me for saying it like this, but you're all completely crazy and we love it!
"Let's cry, because we're Argentinians and we always want to win. But after crying, let's get up, unite, and keep going, because this isn't over. And these past few days, my mom reminded me of a popular saying: 'If there's a rematch, don't be afraid.'
"Finally, my eternal gratitude to our families, friends, those who do the silent work for this National Team, and everyone who supports us throughout the year, in good times and bad. You are a huge part of who we are.
"Thank you to all Argentinians for every message of love and support. You don't know how important you are on this journey. And thank you also to those from other countries who send us messages mocking or rejoicing in our pain.

After featuring throughout the tournament, Mac Allister will now have some time off to recover from what has been a long and testing season on the club and international stage.
In the coming weeks, the midfielder will then reunite with his teammates at Liverpool, giving him a first chance to play under Andoni Iraola in preparation for the next campaign.
It remains to be seen just how much that World Cup run will impact things, but Mac Allister will certainly be hoping that his form from the tournament can be taken into next season.
