Flash Flood Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have already been issued for parts of New Jersey following torrential morning rainfall. While conditions may temporarily improve in some areas, forecasters warn that damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding and isolated tornadoes remain possible in the strongest storms later Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says the greatest threat for severe weather in New Jersey is expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., while AccuWeather says the strongest storms are most likely between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., though some storms could become severe earlier in the afternoon.
While some parts of North Jersey are getting a break after morning downpours, forecasters say additional showers and thunderstorms could redevelop this afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service warns that damaging winds, a few tornadoes and large hail are possible, while AccuWeather says parts of New Jersey remain in a high-risk zone for severe weather.
Where is the Severe Thunderstorm Warning in NJ?
The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of northeastern New Jersey, including Bergen, Hudson, eastern Passaic and northern Essex counties.
Forecasters warned of:
- Wind gusts up to 60 mph
- Quarter-sized hail
- Heavy rain
- Dangerous lightning
- Possible tornado
The warning covered communities including Paterson, Paramus, Hackensack, Secaucus, Hoboken, Union City, Passaic and Bloomfield.
By late morning, the line of storms was shifting toward the Hudson Valley, New York City suburbs and southern Connecticut, while additional severe-weather development remained possible this afternoon.

Possibly, but forecasters say damaging winds and flash flooding remain the biggest threats.
The National Weather Service says some stronger thunderstorms could produce rotation later Tuesday, and a severe thunderstorm warning covering parts of Bergen and Passaic counties noted that a tornado was possible as storms moved through northeastern New Jersey Tuesday morning.
AccuWeather also includes isolated tornadoes among the threats associated with today's severe-weather outbreak across parts of New Jersey, the New York City metro area and surrounding states. However, forecasters continue to emphasize damaging winds, flooding and hail as the primary hazards.

Where is the Flash Flood Warning in NJ?
A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 1:30 p.m. for parts of Bergen, northern Essex and eastern Passaic counties, where radar and rain gauges showed between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service warned that another 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall, raising the risk of flooding in urban areas, roads, highways, underpasses and other low-lying locations.

The warning comes after an earlier Flash Flood Warning was issued for portions of Sussex and Warren counties, impacting areas such as Newton, Andover, Franklin, Sparta, Columbia, Blairstown and Portland.

When will the rain stop in NJ? NOAA forecast
While scattered storms may continue into Wednesday, forecasters expect the worst of the severe weather threat to move out after a cold front pushes through the region.
The National Weather Service expects improving conditions later Wednesday, followed by a stretch of drier weather Thursday, Friday and into the weekend. For many New Jersey communities, the steadiest rain and greatest severe-weather risk should be over by late Wednesday.
