Amazon MGM Studios is hard at work on a new James Bond film. Since acquiring the rights from EON in 2025, Amazon MGM has invested heavily in the James Bond franchise. The first 007 film of this era will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, fresh off his Dune trilogy. Yet the one question on everyone's mind is who will play James Bond, with everyone having their own ideal pick. It seems, though, one high-profile name has pulled out of the running.
Entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider revealed on The Hot Micpodcast that actor Harris Dickinson has dropped out of the race to play James Bond. Sneider claims that Dickinson was a "top-tier candidate" to play Bond, but reportedly the actor recently spoke with producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman to withdraw his name from consideration. Sneider did not name his source, and Amazon MGM Studios has not commented on the story.
Dickinson is best known for his work in critically acclaimed films like Triangle of Sadness, The Iron Claw, and Babygirl. Dickinson also played a British secret agent in The King's Man, a prequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service. The actor is currently set to play John Lennon in Sam Mendes' ambitious four-part Beatles' biopic set for release in 2028. While no release window has been set for Amazon MGM's James Bond, it is possible that Dickinson had to drop out due to his commitment to the Beatles movies, which are currently filming.
Even with Dickinson out of the running, there is no shortage of actors who could play James Bond. Actors like Callum Turner (One Night Only), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Josh O'Connor (Disclosure Day), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), and Dickinson's Beatles co-star Paul Mescal have all been names rumored to be in the running. Recently, Tom Francis was rumored to have auditioned for the part. It should be noted that no official news has been released regarding who is on Amazon MGM's shortlist or who they have screen-tested for the part.
The role of James Bond is one of the most iconic and coveted roles in film. It certainly will be a difficult act to follow Daniel Craig's 15-year tenure as the character. Whoever does land the role will have their work cut out for them, but as the recent success of the video game 007: First Light has shown, audiences are open to accepting a new James Bond.
