Bourne isn’t built like James Bond - Matt Damon explains why another sequel is so difficult

Fresh off leading Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Matt Damon is once again being asked about another legendary role, Jason Bourne. Fans have spent years hoping Jason Bourne would return for one more mission, but Damon says bringing the spy back is far more difficult than it sounds. Unlike James Bond, Bourne’s story was never built to start over with every film.

For Matt Damon, another Bourne film isn’t about revisiting the past. It’s about finding a story capable of carrying one of cinema’s most iconic spies forward.

Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Matt Damon revealed that conversations are already underway for another Jason Bourne film with acclaimed director Edward Berger, whose All Quiet on the Western Front earned widespread praise. While admitting he’d “love to do it,” Damon stressed that the team is refusing to move forward until they find a story capable of matching the emotional and narrative weight of the original trilogy. For the actor, simply bringing Bourne back is not enough; the next chapter has to feel like it truly belongs.

“It’s a tough challenge because Bourne isn't built like James Bond, where every movie is just a standalone mission.” Damon said on The Rich Eisen Show.

Explaining why the franchise presents such a difficult challenge on The Rich Eisen Show, Damon pointed to the fundamental difference between Jason Bourne and James Bond. Unlike 007, whose adventures are largely standalone and can continue with different actors across generations, Bourne’s story unfolds as one continuous journey where every decision carries into the next. 

Even as Jason Bourne’s future remains uncertain, Matt Damon has already reminded audiences why he is still one of Hollywood’s most dependable leading men.

While Bourne’s next mission remains in development, Matt Damon is already enjoying one of the strongest chapters of his career with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Leading the filmmaker’s ambitious adaptation as Odysseus, the actor has earned widespread acclaim for bringing both the battle-hardened warrior and the emotionally exhausted king to life.

Nolan himself admitted Damon’s commitment to the role “shocked” him, while longtime friend Ben Affleck revealed he called the actor after an early screening just to tell him how extraordinary the performance was, a compliment Damon jokingly said he’d been waiting decades to hear.

The epic also boasts one of the year’s most star-studded ensembles, with Tom Holland portraying Telemachus alongside Samantha Morton as Penelope, while Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and several other Hollywood heavyweights round out the cast. Holding an impressive 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Odyssey has quickly cemented itself as one of Christopher Nolan’s most celebrated films.

Even as The Odyssey reminds audiences why Matt Damon remains one of Hollywood’s finest leading men, the actor insists Jason Bourne deserves nothing less than a story worthy of his legacy.
