CHICAGO — The Detroit Tigers have placed starting pitcher Jack Flaherty on the 15-day injured list with right flexor inflammation.
Right-hander Ty Madden was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Flaherty’s spot and help bolster a thin bullpen for Tuesday night’s game against the Cubs.
The Tigers are hopeful that it’s a mild injury that will only require a brief IL stint.
Flaherty went only four innings in his start on Monday night, but the early exit didn’t raise any eyebrows because he had already thrown 82 pitches. It’s unclear how Flaherty suffered the injury.
This will be his second IL stint of 2026. He spent only the minimum 15 days on the injured list after suffering a left peroneal strain on June 12 at Cleveland.
Flaherty has pitched well after a rocky start to the season. Over his last 12 starts, he had a 3.92 ERA and a 3.07 FIP, with 70 strikeouts and 17 walks in 57 1/3 innings.
Madden, 26, is in his second stint with the Tigers in 2026.
The first one was briefly interrupted by injury but otherwise went well. Madden posted a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings with five walks and 23 strikeouts before returning to Triple-A Toledo when Tarik Skubal was reinstated from the injured list last month.
The Tigers selected Madden in the first round (No. 32 overall) of the 2021 draft out of the University of Texas. He made his major league debut in 2024 and posted a 4.30 ERA (3.99 FIP) with 17 strikeouts and eight walks over 23 innings down the stretch. He also made one postseason appearance.
He missed all of the 2025 season with a shoulder injury, but was enjoying a healthy 2026 season before a fluke incident on May 15 in which he was struck by a line drive.
Strangely enough, Madden has had considerably more success in the big leagues than in Triple-A during his young professional career. He has a 6.84 career ERA in 121 innings with the Mud Hens.
This year he’s walked 27 and struck out 31 in 42 innings.
