The 2026 World Cup has only just finished, and Donald Trump already wants the tournament to return to the United States.
The 2030 (Spain, Portugal and Morocco) and 2034 (Saudi Arabia) World Cup host nations have already been decided.
The next available World Cup is in 2028, and it must be held in either North America or Oceania due to FIFA’s rule on rotating continents.
Trump, who has a strong relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, has made his feelings clear on the World Cup returning to the United States.
“Based on the numbers, we will be requesting it again immediately… We have to do this again, and we have to do it while I’m around. You hear that, Gianni?”
Here are three different American cities that should host World Cup games if the tournament returns in 2038.
Which US cities could join a 2038 FIFA World Cup bid?
Chicago
Chicago is the third-biggest city in the United States by population, behind New York City and Los Angeles, but it was not a venue for the 2026 World Cup.
That is because the Chicago Bears’ stadium, Soldier Field, is relatively small and outdated compared to many other venues.
However, the Bears are expected to move into their new stadium within the next five years, long before the 2038 World Cup.
With the stadium in place, Chicago would immediately become one of the best host cities in the US, with excellent transport links and accommodation.
New Orleans
New Orleans already has a world-class stadium (Caesars Superdome), which has hosted the Super Bowl a record-breaking eight times.
The only issue with the Superdome is that they would need to build a natural-grass pitch, but that is far from impossible.
New Orleans’ famous food and music would also make it a popular venue among visiting football supporters.
Las Vegas
Las Vegas might be the most ideal venue yet to host a World Cup game.
Vegas is already famous for welcoming millions of tourists from around the world and showcasing major events.
Fans would also have endless opportunities to entertain themselves in the city when the matches are not being played.
The Allegiant Stadium would need to undergo significant renovations to meet FIFA’s requirements, but money is rarely an issue in Vegas.
