Donald Trump’s World Cup wish looks like it will come to fruition.
The first FIFA World Cup to be staged in the United States is now complete, and sports fans across the nation are already wondering when the global soccer showcase will be back.
Trump is one of many Americans keen to host the World Cup again, and although the earliest possible tournament that can happen is in 2038, the president made it clear it is something he will be requesting “immediately.” It came after Trump yanked Lionel Messi back to force an awkward moment during the World Cup final medal ceremony.

“Based on the numbers, we will be requesting it immediately,” Trump told FOX Sports’ Jenny Taft before the World Cup final. “We have to do this again, and we have to do it while I’m around. You hear that Gianni?”
While the official host country of the 2038 World Cup won’t be announced for another year or two, the US looks in good position to be the frontrunner.
According to prediction market platform Kalshi, the US has the best chance of being named host in 2028, with a 33 percent probability. China is rated as the second most-likely host at 24 percent, followed by Australia and New Zealand at 20 percent.
While Trump certainly has the power to influence, FIFA’s rules for how World Cup hosts are decided are what make the US the clear frontrunner.
Per FIFA, a member association from a confederation that hosted either of the previous two World Cups is generally prohibited from bidding for the next one.
With the 2030 edition taking place in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, along with three games taking place in South America, and the 2034 tournament being hosted by Saudi Arabia, four confederations – Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia – are technically not allowed to host the 2038 World Cup.
That leaves just North America and Oceania, and the United States as the clear favorite given Trump’s desire to host it again, although he will be 92 years old by the time it eventually rolls around.
Trump and Infantino were tied at the hip during much of Sunday’s World Cup final, so it is possible the two discussed the prospect of the US hosting the 2038 edition.

Earlier in the tournament, Trump played a major role in FIFA’s controversial decision to allow USMNT striker Folarin Balogun to play in the Round of 16 match against Belgium despite him being handed a one-match ban for picking up a red card in the previous game.
Trump reportedly phoned Infantino to discuss the ruling and Balogun’s ban was later overturned. The decision received widespread backlash from soccer fans, media, and even fellow World Cup teams as it blatantly went against FIFA’s own rules.
