Lionel Messi’s brief interaction with President Donald Trump is being dissected after the devastated soccer icon appeared eager to move through the World Cup medal ceremony without acknowledging him.

The Argentina captain was in tears after Spain ended his team’s title defense with a 1-0 extra-time victory on Sunday, July 19. When Messi stepped onto the podium to collect his silver medal, he did not appear to make eye contact with Trump and seemingly began walking away before the president had finished placing it around his neck.

Some viewers interpreted the awkward exchange as a deliberate political statement. Others argued that Messi’s body language reflected the crushing defeat he had experienced minutes earlier.

Neither Messi nor Trump has commented on the viral moment.

Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other international leaders for the postgame trophy presentation at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Footage showed an emotional Messi approaching the officials after walking through a guard of honor formed by Spain’s players. The 39-year-old kept his eyes lowered as Trump placed the runners-up medal over his head. Messi then appeared ready to continue down the presentation line without pausing to acknowledge the president.

“The lack of respect is painful to watch,” one viewer wrote. “Even if I don’t agree with a person, this is the head of state.” Other fans defended Messi, noting that he had just lost what could be the final World Cup match of his career, with one writing, “He just lost the World Cup…you clown.”

Other Argentina Players Appeared To Bypass Trump

Messi was not the only Argentina player accused of avoiding the president during the ceremony. Separate footage appeared to show defenders Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez walking past Trump without shaking his hand.

Romero’s interaction generated particular attention because he appeared to acknowledge Infantino, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney while bypassing Trump, who stood between the officials. Unlike Messi’s emotional exchange, Romero’s decision appeared more deliberate to some viewers. However, he has not publicly explained what happened or confirmed that he intended to snub the president.

The moments emerged after Trump and Infantino were loudly booed while walking onto the field. According to a White House pool report cited by The Guardian, the stadium noise reportedly rose from approximately 78 decibels to 84 decibels following their introduction.

Messi Admits Spain Was The Better Team

Messi addressed the defeat after the match but did not mention Trump or the medal ceremony. “I feel sad, but I am aware that we played our hearts out,” he said. “They were better, to be honest. We lost the game, and we accept that.”

“That doesn’t mean that we will forget everything we’ve done so far, so I’d like to thank my people, my players and the country,” Messi added.

Spain controlled most of the final and prevented Argentina from registering a shot during regulation. Ferran Torres finally scored in the 106th minute after Enzo Fernández had been dismissed for receiving his second yellow card.

Messi entered the match with eight goals and four assists during the tournament, but Spain’s defense kept him largely quiet. The loss ended Argentina’s attempt to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive men’s World Cup titles.

Lionel Scaloni Defends Argentina’s Captain

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni became emotional while discussing Messi’s performance and legacy. “I hope that everyone feels proud of him, of what he’s achieved because he’s the best football player ever stepping foot on a pitch,” Scaloni said. “I feel sadness, but knowing that we left everything out there,” the coach continued. “I have a lot of things to say about how we got here, but it’s not worth it.”

Scaloni added that he would hold onto “an enormous memory of this group and what they’ve done” despite acknowledging that Spain deserved to win.

Messi has now appeared in six World Cups dating back to 2006. He led Argentina to the championship in 2022 and also reached the final in 2014, making him the first player to start in three men’s World Cup finals.

At 43 by the time the 2030 tournament begins, Sunday’s loss is widely expected to mark the end of his World Cup career, although Messi has not formally announced his international retirement.

Trump’s role in the ceremony continued after Argentina left the podium. The president presented Spain captain Rodri with the World Cup trophy and remained standing beside the victorious players as they prepared to celebrate.

Infantino appeared to guide Trump away from the center of the podium before Spain lifted the trophy beneath a burst of gold confetti. The scene drew comparisons to the 2025 Club World Cup final, when Trump remained among Chelsea’s players during their celebration at the same stadium.
