One of my favorite things about living with a Maine Coon is the purring. Meatball doesn't just purr. He rumbles. Sometimes I'll be sitting across the room and hear his little motor start up before I even realize he's climbed onto the couch. Even my senior cat, Tarkus, has an impressively loud purr, and I swear it's one of the most comforting sounds in the world.
So when I stumbled across a video of a tuxedo Maine Coon named James, I immediately turned my volume all the way up. If you love those giant, happy Maine Coon purrs, you're going to want to hear this one.
The adorable video was shared by @holly_astbury, and the clip is beautifully simple.
James is just lying there looking perfectly content while producing what can only be described as the feline equivalent of a tiny V-8 engine. His deep, steady purr practically vibrates through the speakers, and it's impossible not to smile listening to it.

It's one of those videos where almost nothing happens ...
And yet you somehow end up watching the whole thing twice.
Or five times.
There's something incredibly relaxing about hearing a cat who's so comfortable, so happy, and so completely at peace that he can't stop purring.
As much as I love Meatball's giant personality, moments like these are one of my favorite parts of sharing my home with cats.
They remind you that happiness can be wonderfully uncomplicated.
A soft bed.
A safe home.
Someone they trust nearby.
Sometimes that's all it takes to get that little engine going.
Why Is a Cat's Purr So Comforting?
Scientists are still studying exactly why cats purr, but it's most commonly associated with contentment, relaxation, and bonding. Cats also sometimes purr when they're stressed, frightened, or recovering from an injury, which suggests purring may serve several different purposes.
For people, though, it's simply soothing.
Many cat parents say the sound helps them relax after a stressful day, almost like natural white noise. It's one of those little everyday moments that quietly reminds you everything is OK.
Honestly, if someone invented a machine that sounded exactly like a happy Maine Coon purring, I'd probably sleep with it on every night.
Although Meatball would likely be offended that I'd replaced him with an appliance.
