A special needs pet comes with a lot of love as well as responsibility. Dogs and cats with physical challenges often require extra care that may be difficult for some people to maintain. Whether it's due to financial strain, relocation, or health issues brought on by aging, pet parents sometimes have a difficult decision to make when it comes to the well-being of their fur baby.
Opal is a senior Maltese mix who is both blind and deaf. The 16-year-old canine's fragile condition calls for special attention, which her elderly parent could no longer provide. Now at the Vintage Pet Rescue sanctuary, Opal has a new home with everything she needs.
The TikTok from @vintagepetrescue told Opal's story and how she ended up at the sanctuary after being picked up from the Providence Animal Shelter.
"She's 16 years old and was found as a stray just before July 4th," the on-screen text explained as Opal sadly curled up in a dog bed in her kennel. "Her elderly [parent] came forward, but realized they could not properly care for her and agreed to surrender her."
The precious pooch required specialized attention, so the rescue organization stepped up to give Opal a safe home.
"She is deaf and blind, and needs quite a bit of TLC," the story continued as Opal was transported to Vintage Pet Rescue. "Our rescue is often called in to offer these senior dogs the care they need in the comfort of a home environment."
Opal Fits Right in With Other Residents
Upon arrival at the rescue, the Maltese mix got a much-needed beauty bath and haircut, lots of hugs and words of encouragement, along with a welcoming meet-and-greet with the other fur baby residents. Opal was quickly accepted into the pack and enjoyed mingling with her new four-legged friends.
Then, she received a special dinner before heading for a snooze in a cozy dog bed with plenty of soft blankets. Opal now gets to spend the rest of her days in wonderful, loving hands.
