Minimalist flip phones seem like they're starting to become a thing. Last month, we saw Commodore's Callback 8020, a stripped-back flip phone that blocks social media, and now, Light is back with the $300 Light Flip.
The Light Flip runs on LightOS, a minimal version of Android that removes social media apps and replaces them with just the necessities, including a music player, an alarm clock, a GPS, and more. Light says that the Light Flip is designed to keep you on your phone "as little as possible."
"Time and time again, we've heard from people – especially the younger generations – who love flip phones," writes Light. "But the current options are poorly made, slow, unsupported, and often pre-installed with the same addictive apps built in. Light is taking everything that already works for tens of thousands of Light Phone users and is bringing that into a heavily desired yet timeless tactile form factor of a flip phone."

It features a throwback design, but modern specs
While Light's other devices look more like standard smartphones, the Light Flip changes things up with an old-school T9 keypad, a tiny touchless screen, and of course, the familiar 2000s-era flip phone design. The phone also supports voice-to-text and audio messaging. It's a bit thicker than modern smartphones and even Light's other phones, like the Light Phone III for example, coming in at 19mm when folded. Still, it's overall way smaller than pretty much every modern smartphone I've ever seen.
Other key specs include a 2.8-inch OLED screen, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. There's also a built-in 50-megapixel camera and a 1,800mAh battery that's actually replaceable (what a novel idea). Of course, there's also a 3.5mm headphone jack and a notch for a loop, adding to the nostalgic feel of the Light Flip.
Light says the first Light Flip pre-orders will ship in April 2027. Would I use a phone like this? At this point, probably. I'm always looking for ways to disconnect from the internet, as much as I love it. What always holds me back is that I'd need an additional smartphone plan for a second minimalist device, since I'd never be able to ditch my smartphone entirely.
