Buying the right drives for your network-attached storage (NAS) can be the difference between losing everything and safely storing countless terabytes of data. NAS-specific drives often cost considerably more than standard consumer storage, which is why I’ve used other methods to acquire HDDs for my own systems. These include buying discounted enterprise drives and shucking external enclosures. It remains a great way to find inexpensive storage for a NAS or PC.

Drive shucking is like playing the storage lottery

If you're not familiar with the term "shucking," it involves purchasing a device with an internal drive. This is usually a form of external storage, or direct-attached storage (DAS). We've covered a few that frequently go on sale for promotions such as Amazon Prime Day, and this allows for some serious savings to be had. Compared to the price of buying a 4TB or 8TB standard NAS drive from Seagate or Western Digital, one could pick up a Western Digital external enclosure for less.

A typical 8TB enclosure essentially contains a port or two, an internal drive, and little else. With some careful consideration, the right tools, and a YouTube guide or two, it's generally possible to pull these plastic enclosures apart to reveal the drive inside. After testing the unit with your favorite disk software to ensure it's running well, this drive could then be extracted from the external device, resulting in an 8TB drive that could be used inside a NAS with a slight discount over your standard NAS-rated equivalent.

I say "equivalent," but sometimes companies like to throw NAS drives inside these enclosures. It's worth looking up the model number and capacity to see what drive you can expect to see. Some are simple white label drives; others may be the real deal with proper branding and a discount that could blow you away. Then there's the possibility of it being a complete dud, which is where the risks of shucking rear their ugly heads.

A great drive is not guaranteed

The primary issue with shucking is you don't know what drive will be inside. Manufacturers aren't willing to confirm this data as they source multiple drives to fill these units, and so it's not a given which would actually be inside the enclosure you'd receive outside of using serial numbers and the like. This can make it difficult to get the right drives from shucking. No one wants a bad white label HDD, but this is sometimes what will be present.

Unlike NAS-labeled models, drives sold inside external enclosures may not carry workload ratings or warranties intended for always-on NAS use. These are external storage enclosures after all. They're designed for you to connect one to the PC, turn it on, transfer some data, and turn it off. To ensure you're getting a decent drive, you'll need to pay attention to things like CMR or SMR drives, drive cache, workload ratings, and compatibility details. For non-critical home use, these compromises may be acceptable.

But for storing data on a PC, which doesn't need to be online continuously, even budget-friendly drives inside a shucked enclosure could be worth extracting for loading an ever-expanding Steam library or storing larger media files locally before offloading them to a network location.

You can spend a lot of time checking model numbers, looking through reports from those who previously bought one, and seeing what others have found through shucking to get an idea of what should work. Don't worry too much about having equally rated drives inside the NAS array. RAID is not a backup, so anyone using shucked drives should have a tested backup strategy in place. I can recover my entire home lab in under an hour — and yes, I've tested it.

I don't mind using shucked drives because I've got the means to restore all containers, VMs, datasets, and settings in record time thanks to a combination of Proxmox snapshots, full NAS backups, and a 3-2-1 strategy. Backups are another deal, however, and I make sure I'm using reliable storage to keep all my precious data stored safely. The aim is to save money where possible without sacrificing performance, reliability, and data security.

But it's not simply enclosures that can be shucked. Think about all the hardware you've used over the years. When recycling old systems, keep the drives aside and in storage boxes. These can come in handy further down the line, especially if they're HDDs with a few terabytes of capacity. SSDs are even more valuable right now, and if you manage to score a few 1TB modules from other devices, these could create the ultimate platform for super-fast network storage.

The savings need to be worth the extra work

Shucking only makes sense when the discount is large enough to justify the uncertainty. Before buying an external drive, I compare its price per terabyte with new NAS drives, refurbished enterprise models, and any current sales. Saving a small amount isn't worth dismantling an enclosure, testing the drive, and potentially dealing with compatibility or warranty problems. The best shucking deals are the ones where the external unit is significantly cheaper than the bare-drive alternatives.

There are also hidden costs to consider. You may need adapters, mounting hardware, additional cooling, or even another enclosure if you want to reuse the original drive elsewhere. Returning a faulty unit can also become more complicated once the casing has been opened. I try to keep every clip, screw, cable, and piece of packaging until the drive has passed several tests and spent enough time running without errors.

It's also worth giving the drive a short burn-in period before treating it as dependable. New and used drives can fail early, regardless of the label on the front, and a shucked drive carries additional uncertainty because its exact specifications may not have been clear before purchase. Testing cannot guarantee that a drive will last for years, but it can help filter out obvious failures and make the storage lottery feel a little less random.

I'll keep shucking, but it's not for everyone

It's not perfect, and shucking certainly isn't for everyone. If you're just starting out, I would recommend sticking to buying either refurbished drives or brand-new ones on sale. There's a risk you may end up picking up an enclosure with a dud drive or at least one that won't work too well with storing data inside a NAS. Warranty is the biggest factor here, as if the drive fails a couple of days or weeks after shucking, you're essentially out of luck.

For a PC, it really boils down to what you need the drive to do. So long as you've backed up the system and all data stored on it, I don't see any reason not to consider shucking for a desktop system if the deal is enticing enough versus discounted consumer-grade storage drives. I'll continue shucking drives until it becomes unfeasible or unreliable enough that it no longer makes financial sense to choose this method over alternatives.
