Summer in the South demands a steady stream of ice cream. When we don’t have time to make a batch of Iron-Skillet Peach Ice Cream or Cornbread Ice Cream, store-bought will do just fine, thank you very much. And we’re not alone in our love of the cold treat. Instacart, the delivery app, ran a survey to find out what type of ice cream we’re all screaming for, including favorite flavors, beloved brands, and statewide preferences.
Vanilla remains the country’s top choice. While we believe that’s because folks haven’t tried Blue Bell’s Cookie Two-Step, vanilla is a perennial favorite for serving alongside pie or as the foundation for a hot fudge sundae or banana split. According to Instacart, classic vanilla covers over one-fifth of ice cream purchases, making up almost 21% of ice cream orders.
The runner-up is, of course, Chocolate (7.9%), followed by Cookie Dough (6.9%). The rest of the top ten is made up of crowd-pleasing faves: Cookies & Cream (5.8%), Chocolate Fudge/Brownie (5.1%), and Peanut Butter (4.7%); followed by Mint Chocolate Chip (4.7%) and Coffee (4.5%), with the fruit-flavors— Strawberry (3.7%) and Cherry (3.1%) —rounding out the top ten.
When it comes to which flavor is top in each state, the South loves itself some Butter Pecan. While Vanilla and Chocolate have their place, two Southern states went their own way. Kentucky opts for Raspberry, while in Tennessee, Cheesecake is the top choice. In fact, per Instagram, “it’s the only state where the dessert-in-a-tub tops the list.”
As for which brand Southerners love, Texas-made Blue Bell ice cream takes the top title in most of the South. However, there are a few other ice cream companies competing for the title. Mayfield Dairy Farms, which started on farms in the Smoky Mountains, is big in Georgia while Missouri-based Ice Cream for Bears has made a big impression on ice cream lovers in Florida.
