No surprises here!
Expedia just dropped its second annual Expedia Island Hot List for 2026, a ranking that reveals the next big island vacation destinations that have been gaining momentum in recent years. Expedia used its own flight search data to compile its list of the 10 fastest-rising islands, and only one island in the United States made the ranking.
And that island is none other than Florida’s very own Sanibel Island.
Ranked No. 8 on Expedia’s Island Hot List, Sanibel Island was considered to be the best island for family escapes. Located on Southwest Florida‘s Gulf Coast, just a short drive from Fort Myers, this charming island city is as quaint as can be. Sanibel has no buildings taller than a palm tree and no traffic lights either, making it the ultimate spot for unwinding and escaping from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
When it comes to family-friendly things to do, the most popular activity on Sanibel Island is shelling. In fact, the island city is world-renowned as the “Seashell Capital of the World.” Shelling has even become so popular in Sanibel that some hotels offer their guests special sinks and worktables for cleaning and packing shells! (Psst...the best beach for shelling on Sanibel is Bowman’s Beach, just FYI!)
However, despite its rather relaxed vibe, Sanibel also has plenty to do and see. For example, there are many places to dine on readily available fresh seafood, and options for boating, wildlife, biking, and fishing excursions. There are so many ways to enjoy Sanibel Island, making it a great vacation destination for all types of families. You may want to consider Sanibel Island when you’re planning your next beach getaway. You might just want to stay forever.
