The Joker Gets Reimagined Once Again to Face Batman in New Streaming Release This Month

The 10-part streaming release arrives at the end of the month with a reimagined version of the Joker.

There are very few, if any, comic book villains more iconic than the Joker. He has faced Batman in countless stories told across various mediums through the years, and the rivalry will be reimagined once again in a new streaming release that's coming at the end of this month.

On July 31, Prime Video will debut the second season of the acclaimed animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. A spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series, the first season dropped back in 2024 to rave reviews. However, it came with one major absence, as the Clown Prince of Crime was not a big part of Season 1. That officially changes with Season 2, which introduces this universe's version of the Joker. A sneak peek photo reveals the Joker standing in the shadows behind one of his victims, and he's similarly obscured by darkness at the tail end of the Season 2 trailer.

Batman: Caped Crusader was created by Bruce Timm, who serves as showrunner alongside James Tucker. It is set during the 1940s, offering a film noir-inspired version of the Dark Knight and his Rogues Gallery. The first season had already brought about unique interpretations of other supervillains like Catwoman, Clayface, and Penguin. While the new Joker in Season 2 will also be putting a different spin on the character, Tucker has teased that longtime comic book readers may notice some familiar aspects.

"If Joker begins with Mark Hamill [of Batman: The Animated Series] and Jack Nicholson [of 1989's Batman], this take on the Joker will be very different for them," Tucker told The Direct. "But for people who've read comics for a long, long, long, long time, it won't be. I think some people will recognize it and go, 'Oh, I see what they're doing.' And other people will go, 'Wow, this is different.' But, I think it's all Joker."

Will Harley Quinn and the Joker Interact in Season 2?

It's not yet known if the Caped Crusader incarnation of the Joker will have a relationship with Harley Quinn. Notably, Harley Quinn, voiced by Jamie Chung, was featured as a villain in the first season. The character will appear in Season 2 as well, but it remains to be seen if and how she will interact with the Clown Prince of Crime. Originally, Harley was introduced in DC lore as a sidekick for the Joker.

Other major Batman foes will be given new looks in the new season. Like the Penguin in Season 1, the Mad Hatter is going to be gender-swapped for Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2. Riddler and Scarecrow are also among the redesigned villains set to be featured in the new episodes.

Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 debuts on July 31, 2026, on Prime Video. All 10 episodes will be premiering simultaneously.
