In an era where everything is getting rebooted, one of the greatest Western movies of all time didn't escape unscathed. 1960's The Magnificent Seven previously had a remake in 2016, and it's now becoming a TV series.
MGM+ announced the project in December 2025, which would be an eight-episode series based on the iconic Western film. The new reboot confirmed Matt Dillon as the iconic Chris Adams, previously played by Yul Brynner. Per Deadline, The Magnificent Seven reboot is officially in production.

Dillon was confirmed to play Chris Adams in February, as he plays the leader of seven gunslingers who sign on to the task of protecting a group of innocent villagers from a mercenary land baron hellbent on stealing their land. Stoic, steady under pressure, and with an unflinching gaze that does most of the talking for him, Chris has no patience for hypocrisy or cruelty and holds fast to a quiet moral code rooted in fairness and restraint.
Other previously announced actors include Matt Dillon as Chris Adams, Will Patton as Cyrus T. Clemons, Michael Ealy as Vin Tanner, Danny Pino as Santiago “Santi” Vega, Joanne Froggatt as Harriet Talbot and Amy Forsyth as Katie “Deadeye” Dalton.
As production kicked off in Calgary, the show added several new faces. Joshua Close (Wayward, Fargo), Ken Yamamura (The Wolverine, Tetris), Michael Rubenfeld (Lucky Number Slevin) and Joel Nankervis (Your Fault: London) all joined in series regular roles.
Close is set to play Skelton, who is described as "cold, calculating, and always three steps ahead." Yamamura plays Kenjiro “Kenji”, who is warm and endlessly curious; Rubenfeld will play Eli “Wick” Kagan, a da Vinci-esque genius inventor, and Nankervis joins as Jebidah “Jeb” Campbell, who is quick-witted, impulsive, and bursting with nervous energy.
What Happens in The Magnificent Seven?
The TV show's story will be similar to the 1960 film and its 2016 remake. MGM+'s The Magnificent Seven is set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier, and it follows seven gifted but flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village after it is massacred by mercenaries working for a ruthless land baron trying to seize their land. As the team embeds itself and prepares to defend against overwhelming odds, they grapple with a central question: Is violence acceptable to defend people whose faith is based on non-violence? The series explores the backstories of each of the Seven, what’s at stake for them, and why they choose this mission — delving into themes of honor, sacrifice, redemption, morality, and faith.
The 1960 Western was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai, and it was a massive success, grossing $9.75 million from rentals on a $2 million budget. The Western starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, and Horst Buchholz. The Magnificent Seven spanned three sequels, a TV show, and a 2016 remake.
The 2016 film had an all-star cast led by Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, and Peter Sarsgaard. It received mixed reviews and flopped in theaters, grossing only $162.4 million against a budget estimated at between $90 million and $107 million. It did, however, find success on streaming, which is great news for the upcoming TV show.
MGM+'s The Magnificent Seven series doesn't have a release date yet.
